Expectations were high as the team went into the season with hope after the changes that took place at the club. The management and coaching staff had targeted a top four finish. A new youth system was also introduced after things at the club became more secure.
There were mostly youngsters that strengthened the team in the summer
Several new players arrived over the summer. Montenegro U21 forward Goran Vujovic joined from Banat. Serbian Keeper Nenad Filipovics was another, as was Croatian midfielder Milan Pavlicic. Montenegro central defender Ilija Radovics moved to Fehervar, while Bosnian defender Marko Andic arrived from the Belgium first division. Left footed defender Cesar Romero from Brazil was another Summer arrival. 20 year old young midfielder Akos Elek joined from Kazincbarcika.
The club broke up the contract with Pavol Durica. The final days of July also saw more movement as Zsolt Feher moved to Papa on loan.
Pre-season friendly matches and a good training camp in Austria
Vidi spent pre-season at their Austrian base in Windischgarsten. There were friendly matches arranged including a a 2-2 draw with Apoel Nicosia.
The club also participated in the Kiraly cup and finished in third place. There was a final friendly match that ended in a 2-0 loss against NK Osijek.
Shaky start leads to a change in manager
Around 2500 travelling Vidi supporters made the trip to the banks of lake Balaton to see their side kick off the new league season. They saw their team go down 1-0 to Siofok. However, 3 points were picked up away at Haladas after a single goal win. Debrecen emerged 1-0 winners when the two sides met in week 3 of the season. A further 2-1 defeat at the hands of KTE meant that the management of the club made a decision for a change of manager. Istvan Varga replaced Laszlo Disztl on the 18th August on the bench.
There was a noticeable improvement as Vidi beat REAC 2-1 and then picked up a point in the 1-1 draw with Kaposvar. A battling performance saw a further 3 points collected after Honved were beaten 2-1. MTK proved too strong at home and won 2-0, but a further 6 points were picked up after a 1-0 win over DVTK and a 4-1 victory over Paks. Week 11 ended in defeat at ZTE. The home side kept the points with their 2-0 win. There were goals galore when Vidi emerged 3-2 winners over Győri ETO.
The biggest defeat of the season followed at the home of Vasas. Fehervar side suffered a 4-1 loss. Two further draws against Nyiregyhaza 1-1, and a goaless draw with Ujpest saw more points dropped. That meant a 9th place finish, which was short of the top four target.
Hope in the league cup – while Debrecen knock Vidi out of the Hungarian cup
Fehervar FC as they were known were looking to defend the league cup, which they lifted the previous season. Group D was made up of Honved, Ferencvaros, Kecskemet, REAC and Baktaloranthaza. The red and blues remained unbeaten and progressed to the next round.
Fehervar entered the cup at round 3 stage. There was a 3-0 win at Tatabanya, while a penalty shootout was needed away at Felcsut after the two sides drew 1-1. Debrecen were beaten 2-1 at home, but the 1-0 win for Debrecen meant that they went through on the away goals rule.
8 new players arrive at the start of the year
The squad was increased by 8 players during the winter transfer window. Brazilian forward Andre Alves and midfielder Denes Szakaly arrived from Kaposvar. Olekszandr Tkacsuk was another new player for the club. 21 year old right footed Brazilian Alison Silva and Croatian defender Ivan Buljubacsic were further arrivals. Gabor Kocsis arrived back from his loan deal at Felcsut.
Departures included Ukrainian defender Mihajlo Deniszov. Laszlo Feher moved to Liberty Salonta, together with Viktor Bolcsfoldi. Adam Csobanki moved to REAC. Peter Simek joined Ujpest in a loan move.
Pre-season at home and in Croatia
Pre-season started with a 1-0 win over Paks. There was a 0-0 draw with Győri ETO before four goals were knocked past Bocs.
A total of 25 players travelled to the Zagreb training camp where Fehervar lost 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb. A further 2-0 defeat against Lokomotiv Zagreb followed. FK Banat were beaten 3-0.
The team finds its feet after a difficult start
Istvan Varga noted before the first game of the spring season that "we should be pleased by a single goal win". That proved wise as Siofok were beaten 2-1 at home. The team then suffered indifferent form as a 1-0 loss to Debrecen halted things. There was a painful defeat against KTE 2-1, but things improved a little with a 4-0 win over REAC. A point was collected when Fehervar drew 1-1 with Kaposvar, but Honved emerged with the points at the Sostoi after a 2-0 win.
The team picked up as the spring season continued. A 1-1 draw with ZTE and a 2-2 draw at Vasas, as well as a 2-1 defeat to Haladas, were squeezed in between five wins. A Vujovics hatrick gave Fehervar a 4-0 win at the home of MTK, 2-1 win over DVTK and a 1-0 win at Paks. 3 good points were picked up in the 2-1 win away at Győr, while Nyiregyhaza were defeated 2-0. The season ended with a 2-1 win in Budapest against Ujpest.
The good run of results was not enough to earn a place in the top 4. The team finished the season in 6th place in the league table. The management of the club decided that the manager and coaching team would not have their contracts extended.
Marching forward in the League cup
The League cup continued with a 1-1 draw against Honved. KTE were beaten 2-0 at the Sostoi and that was enough to finish top of the group again and a place in the last 8.
DVTK were the opponents in the quarterfinals. The away match ended 0-0, but Fehervar secured a 1-0 home win to make it through to the semi-finals. Győri ETO were waiting and the two sides met first at the Sostoi. That finished in a 2-0 win for Fehervar and the two then played out a 1-1 draw in Győr.
Pecs met Fehervar in the League cup final and the red and blues emerged 3-1 winners to lift the League cup for the second year running.
