The club changed its name back to Videoton FC on the final day of July. The owner of Videoton Holding Zrt. decided that it was best to make the change, with new owner Istvan Garancsi taking over and hoping to put the club back on the footballing map.

Busy transfer window

Pal Lazar had been on loan with the club since January 2008. The defender completed his move to the club and signed a 3 year deal. There are contract extensions for Brazilian forward Alison da Silva, keeper Zsolt Sebok and defender Robert Varga. Vidi sign defender Zoltan Liptak from Ujpest. Adam Presinger also signs a 3 year deal while Montenegro midfielder Milan Purovics and Damir Milanovic also arrive. Striker David Kocsis is another to sign on the dotted line. Balazs Farkas II moved to Vidi in a season long load deal from Dinamo Kiev. There is also a three year deal for keeper Tomas Tujvel, which the 26 year old signs to join from Slovakian first division side FC Nitra.

There is also a player exchange with defender David Mohl moving to Debrecen and Gabor Demjen moving in the other way. Peter Simek completes a move to Ujpest after spending a loan period there. Milan Pavlisic also departs after he could not agree new terms following the end of his contract on the 30th June. There is also no new contract on offer for Akos Koller or Viktor Nemeth.

New season, New coaching team - but Matthaus does not move to Fehervar

Former manager Istvan Varga and his coaching team saw their contracts come to an end as June ended. That meant that the team did not have a manager in place as the players headed off for their summer break. There was an oral agreement with German Lothar Matthaus to take over, but the former world cup winner does not make the move to Szekesfehervar in the end.

The players arrived back for pre-season training with Győrgy Mezey taking over as manager from the 1st July. He had been director of football until agreeing to step up. He brought in coaches Balazs Beko, Tamas Bodog and keeper coach Peter Disztl.

Good training camp and a dream start to the new season

The team again headed for the Austrian mountains of Windischgarsten for their summer training camp. Intensive training started from the first day with several friendly matches arranged. Those included games against Apoel Nicosia, Bohemians Prague and CSZKA Sofia.

Vidi kicked off the new season in the Soproni league with a resounding 6-3 away win at Kecskemet. The game against Diosgyőr was played behind closed doors and an exciting finish secured a 3-2 win. Further wins against Papa (1-0), and Honved (2-0) gave the team a solid start A run of 4 wins and 2 defeats then followed: Haladas beat Vidi 4-3 at home while ZTE triumphed 2-1 to keep the points. The start of September saw a break in the league with the international matches taking priority. Lokomotiv Zagreb were the visitors in a friendly game, which resulted in a deserved 2-1 win.

The Soproni league commenced with a 3-2 home win over Nyiregyhaza and a 3-0 win over Paks. There was a 2-2 draw away at the Ulloi street stadium of Ferencvaros. Kaposvar were then defeated 2-0 as the points kept on coming. A draw away in Budapest against MTK was followed by a good win over Debrecen 3-0 at the Sostoi stadium.

A total of 7 points were collected from the final 3 autumn league games. Those included a 4-2 win over Vasas, a 1-0 win at Ujpest and a point picked up verses Győr brought the first half of the season to an end. Vidi were top of the league table with a two points lead, but had also scored the most goals.

Videoton also led the fair play league, which confirmed them as the side with the best record when it came to bookings.

Success in the league cup - and progress in the Hungarian cup

Group B in the league cup included Vidi, Paks, Győri ETO and ZTE. Kaposvar and Papa were also drawn in the same group. Vidi opened with a 2-0 defeat to ZTE, but ended by toping the group.

Vidi entered the Hungarian cup at the third round stage. The Puskas Academy and then Palhalmai were knocked out to make it to the last 16. Lombard Papa were the opponents in the next round. They were comfortably beaten 3-0 in the first leg, with the return leg ending in a goaless draw. However, Vidi lost both legs against Ujpest by a 1-0 scoreline to go out of the cup.

The team strengthens further

The squad was improved further during the winter window with Győrgy Sandor arriving from Ujpest. Laszlo Lencse made the move from MTK in January while Nemanja Nikolics joined from Kaposvar. Milko Novakovics arrived on a loan deal from FK Mogren of Montenegro. Csaba Ponczok was promoted from the youth set up together with Andras Fejes

There were also players who headed out of the door. Gabor Demjen moved to Ujpest for a half year loan deal. Club legend Zsolt Dveri decided to hang his boots up. He agreed to play if needed and also help out in coaching.

Friendly matches and training camp

The first weeks of January were focused on preparing for the second half of the season. The first team also played a friendly against the second team and won 4-0. The squad departed for Belek in Turkey in the first few days of February. They won all of their friendly games as things were stepped up and fitness increased.

Hope until the final minute - and a real fight for the league title aranyért

The first league match saw good football and lots of fight from the team as they won 2-0 against KTE. That was followed by a 1-0 win against Diosgyőr and a 2-0 victory over Lombard Papa. There were no goals in the match with Honved in Kispest, but plenty of goals in the 4-2 win over Haladas. Four goals were shared in the 2-2 draw with Zalaegerszeg.

The points continued to come with 8 matches left of the season. A 1-0 win over Nyiregyhaza secured 3 points as did a 2-1 win against Paks. The two defences were on top when Vidi and Ferencvaros drew 0-0. The team travelled to Kaposvar and came away with maximum points after a 3-1 win.

The undefeated run came to an end in match 26 of the season. MTK managed to win 1-0 at the Sostoi stadium and then Debrecen won 3-2 against the red and blues. With 3 matches left of the season, Vidi beat Vasas away from home a 1-1 draw with Ujpest saw two points dropped.

The real drama was left to the final day of the season and a visit to Győr. Vidi went in to the match needing to win the game. Győri ETO themselves were after third place. Debrecen had a home match against Kecskemet, which they surprisingly lost 1-0. That meant that a draw away at Győr would secure the league title. Things did not go according to plan and Videoton ended up losing that match 1-0. The dream fell apart at the last moment, but one crumb of comfort was a second place finish.

Nemanja Nikolics ended the season as top goalscorer with 18 goals to his name. Manager Győrgy Mezey knew that he had something good to build on for the following season.
