The season started with difficulty: There were problems in June with gaining the licence. The Hungarian FA shut the club out of transfers for a month at the start of July. There was also a change in the club owner with Fetev - Szer Kft buying the majority of the club.
Movement despite ban on transfers
The ban put its stamp on transfer movement during the early summer. Forward Illes Sitku returned to the club after a brief spell in Turkey. The club agreed terms with Akos Koller, Peter Simek and Balazs Farkas. Keeper Viktor Nemeth arrived from Nyiregyhaza. while Adam Horvath and Balazs Magyar moved up from the youth ranks.
The summer of 2007 saw Brazilian midfielder Vieira Julio Cesar Julinho return home, while Attila Kuttor went to Siofok on loan. Alumona Alexandr moved to Russia while Lajos Terjek continued his career in Cyprus.
Bad start despite good pre-season
Fehervar enjoyed a good pre-season with several wins including against REAC, Paks and Vasas.
The mood within the club was positive as the team started the new season. The supporters were also hoping for the team to hit the ground running. Things did not go according to plan with an opening day defeat away at MTK by 2-0. A poor performance against Kaposvar brought a point in a 1-1 draw. Honved then beat Fehervar 5-1 in Kispest. That resulted in supporters voicing their concern with the management of the club. The team pulled itself together against easier opponents. There were five consecutive wins to follow: Vasas 5-2, Nyiregyhaza 1-0, Tatabanya 7-0, REAC 2-0 and another 2-0 win over Sopron.
The good run did not last for long and you could sense problems in the background. The remaining seven games of the autumn brought one draw with Debrecen and a final day 2-0 win over ZTE. The other matches were lost, which included a 4-1 beating at Győr, 2-1 at both Paks and Ujpest and a 2-0 loss to Diosgyőr. The team also failed to collect points at Siofok in the 1-0 defeat.
Great start to the season and in the league cup – progress in the Hungarian cup
The League cup was in its trial stage with the Hungarian FA running the cup over the autumn and spring seasons. Fehervar were drawn in group A with Ujpest, Honved and Paks. The home and away games saw the team end top of the group.
Győri ETO were next up and a 1-1 home draw was followed up by a 2-2 away result. That saw Fehervar go through on aggregate to the final four.
The club entered the Hungarian cup at the third round stage. BKV Elore were beaten 5-0 and Velence were next opponents and that match ended in a 12-0 win. Fehervar drew Győr in the next round and the first match in Győr ended in a draw. However, the second leg in Szekesfehervar produced a 3-2 win to make it through to the next round. That saw Fehervar among the best 8 and a tie with Debrecen. The first leg at home was won 2-1. However, the team lost the away match 3-1 to go out of the cup.
The takeover happens
The end of the season saw reassurances in the club house. The Hungarian FA decided to take away the club licence due to financial problems at the football club. The supporters only had to wait 2 weeks for the saviour to arrive in the form of Istvan Garancsi. A new era slowly began with the first step being to restore the financial background and make things stable. The new Managing Director was Istvan Bozai.
The previous manager left the club in December and in his place from January was Laszlo Disztl, who took over the running of the first team. The new coaching team were introduced and the clb agreed new deals with some of the players. The club received its licence back on the 12th January and as Istvan Garancsi noted afterwards: it was real team work!
Arrivals and departures - squad is strengthened
The first arrival of the new era was the well built Ukrainian defender Mihajlo Deniszov. Midfielder Attila Polonkai joined the club from REAC. More foreign players included Slovakian defender Roman Drabenjuk and Pavol Durica. Pal Lazar joined from Romanian side Liberty Salonta, while Istvan Sandor moved to the club from Tatabanya.
The club mutually broke up the contract with Attila Kuttor, who was on loan at Siofok. That saw the defender move to Haladas permanently. Mario Bozsics moved to Budapest and Ujpest. Gabor Vayer joined Polish side LKS Lodz. The new management team also broke up contracts with Tibor Baranyai, Attila Meszaros, Adam Horvath and Palfi Milan. The usual friendlies were arranged ahead of the season. FK Rad provided strong opposition and a 0-0 draw. FC Banat were beaten 2-1 and David Disztl scored 3 goals in the 4-0 win over Kaposvolgye.
The first steps - building begins
There were new expectations in place for the new era at the club. Naturally nobody was expecting miracles in the first half of the season, but the plan was to make the club one of the best in Hungary in the long term. Further aims was for the club to regularly compete in European competition. Sandor Berzi was brought into the club and name Managing Director.
The first day of the season came on the 25th February 2008. MTK were the opponents and everybody was hyped up to perform to their best. An Illes Sitku goal secured a 1-0 win over league leaders MTK. However, the joy was short lived and a 1-0 defeat at Kaposvar followed. Honved were the visitors to the Sostoi in the third game, which ended 0-0.
The goal drought ended at Vasas in Budapest with a 2-1 win. The team then picked up good wins as they moved upwards in the table. A run of 6 matches saw the team unbeaten including wins over Nyiregyhaza, 3-1 against Tatabanya and 2-1 over REAC. Győri ETO were then defeated 1-0 and Paks 3-0. There was nothing to be ashamed of the final 5 matches. Ujpest won 1-0 against Fehervar, and there was a 3-0 defeat at Debrecen. However, there were wins over Diosgyőr, Siofok and ZTE.
A good spring ended with 12 wins from the 15 league matches. There was a draw and 2 defeats to secure 5th place in the league table.
League cup winners – bad luck in the Hungarian cup
The league cup continued in February. The youngsters continued to be given the chance with the club drawn in Group B with Kaposvar, Paks and Siofok. Progressed was secured and a game against Debrecen followed. Fehervar came out 1-0 winners at home and the team then did well in the second leg to win the league cup. The Hungarian cup was less successful as the team went out 4-3 on aggregate to Debrecen.
