Stopira: The African Nations Cup was a great experience for me

The Cape Verde international spoke about his experiences at the tournament, as well as how he spent the free time over December and January.

- You played for your home country, Cape Verde in January at the African Cup. When did you begin preparations for the tournament?

I finished the autumn season with Vidi on the 10th December, which was followed by a week off to rest. The preparation started on the 18th December, and we continued to prepare through the Christmas period. We then headed off to the training camp on the 3rd January to continue getting ready for the tournament. We carried out serious work through this period and everyone was really looking forward to the tournament starting.

- You fought hard to make it through from your group, and you had every chance to do this as you went through the group without losing. You ended up suffering such bad luck, having scored fewer goals, which cost your country progression to the next stage. How would you sum up the performance of Cape Verde at the tournament? What did it feel like to participate in this continental cup?

- It was a great feeling to actively take part in this tournament. I was not there at the 2013 Africa cup as I had suffered a broken leg. Sadly we did not make it through the group stage, suffering really bad luck. I still feel that we managed to show the whole world that we are a very small country, but we do have good players who can play good football. It really was a great experience at the Africa Cup.

- Which match was the most memorable for you?

The final group match was the most memorable. Our fate was sealed in this game and we also had to play in such circumstances, that there are very few examples of. We were sure that we could go through before the match. Then there was a massive monsoon as the game kicked off, and there was so much rain that fell on to the pitch within minutes, which made the playing surface impossible to play on. It was not only us that thought this, but also the Zambian players who also shared these views. Nobody could understand why the match official allowed the game to go ahead."

"The biggest argument was that the other group match went ahead without any problems at all, and as both games had to be played at the same time, then that game should also have been stopped or as things turned out, we had to complete the game. This was such an event that for us, the players had no reasonable control over. I am sure that had the weather been ideal, we would have managed to make it through in our final group match.

- You received a few days to rest by Vidi following the end of your involvement in the Africa cup. How did you spend these few days?

Yes, this is correct as I did not have to return back to Vidi after the tournament ended for us. I received a week off to relax. I spent this period with my family and my daughter, as I do not get too many chances to see them during the season. I needed to rest but I am really looking forward to training again with the Videoton team.
