Roland Juhasz: We need to keep the positives and fix the mistakes

Our international defender talks about the first friendly match, the spirit within the squad, the tasks ahead and the aims for spring. He also spoke about Pal Dardai and his new hairstyle.

You held your stomach after scoring the goal against Samsung Suwon and you could not complete the match. What happened and how are you now?

As I stretched to head the ball, I felt a tight pain in my stomach, so I asked to come off so that we would not take any risks. They checked me over today, but hopefully nothing serious has happened.

The Suwon head coach spoke after the match saying that his quick players succeeded in surprising Vidi in the first half. How did you see things?

This is true. Let us add that the worst thing about this is that we ended up conceding goals that were avoidable. You could also really see that we were up against strong opponents, who ruthlessly took advantage of the chances that came their way. We still have time towards the end of pre-season and our unusual team yesterday just confirms this. There was a difference between the two 45 minute periods, with us creating some good chances in the second half, but we could only score from one of them. The problems in the first half was not characteristic of us, so we will need to look in to things to see why they happened. We made mistakes, which is part of football. This is why games like these are good so that you can realize that we still have plenty of work to do. We also need to highlight the positives, but also look into the reasons for our mistakes, and we can only be successful by this.

Our next opponents are Lokomotiv Moscow, so things will not be any easier against the Russian opponents.

We have already worked on these things during our last training camp, which is to correct the mistakes that we made during the autumn season. I am sure that we will remedy the problems that we had on Sunday over the next few days. Our head coach is a perfectionist, who made sure that we kept our feet on the ground after the start to the season. We now have a series of games ahead where we can show that the first half against Suwon was an exception and that we have overcome that. I am pleased that we have been able to play against strong opponents, which has so much meaning to them to play in games like these rather than winning against weaker opponents. This will help us to see that things do not always work out the way we originally thought.

It was roughly at this time a year ago, and just a few km from here during the second training camp when we spoke. Back then you appeared to have had enough mentally, but things appear to be much better now.

Last year we had two much longer training camps than those we are having this year. We spent a total of just 2 days at home over a space of 35-36 days. This year things are much more humane for us and the team spirit is completely different, which also makes things easier in times like this. I can comfortably say that there is good company both on and off the pitch between us. The best example of this is that during the training camp, when we are together over the whole day, we still meet up in the evening in groups of six or eight to spend time. I would like this bonding between this group to stay with us through the spring league season.

Hungarian international manager Pal Dardai was last week named the caretaker manager of German club Hertha Berlin. His team then went on to win their first league match under him (which saw them climb out of the relegation zone). It is well known that he shares his thoughts with you with regards to the international team, but have you spoken with him over recent days?

We exchanged one message between us where I congratulated him on his appointment. It is a very big thing that he has become a manager of a Bundesliga side. This is not only a success for him but for Hungarian football as well. He confirmed in his first game in charge, that what we reached together in the national side was not by accident. Pal is a coach and also a type of person whose approach is that he can deliver his thoughts to the players quickly. The players are able to identify with this so I wish him the best success at Hertha, and also that he remains national team manager.

A final question, which has nothing to really do with football: Where has your hair gone?

There was a time when I shaved all my hair off, but I do not usually cut it this short. I felt that a senior player among so many young players made this more reasonable. It is a new year and a little bit of a difference, which is mainly thanks to the teams exceptional style.
