Photo943Klubunk történetének hatodik válogatott játékosa 20 éves koráig játszott szülővárosa akkoriban remekül szereplő csapatában, a Tatabányai Bányászban, de ő maga az élvonalban nem debütálhatott. Egy katonai szolgálattal töltött, Honvéd Rákóczis évet követően igazolt Fehérvárra és azonnal Tímár Mihály utódja lett: első idényében 18 mérkőzésen játszott, 1979-ig pedig folyamatosan minimum 28 mérkőzés jutott neki, bajnoki ezüstérmes lett.
Az 1979-80-as idényre érkezett Disztl Péter, ezzel Kovács vidis pályafutása is véget ért (8 meccset azért még kapott), de természetesen az NB I-es nem. Az ETO-hoz igazolt, ahol első szezonjában ismét nem lépett pályára, de aztán beindult a szekér.
A győriek Verebes Józseffel kétszer lettek bajnokok, majd kétszer ezüstérmesek, Kovács pedig első számú hálóőr volt. A negyedik idény közben igazolt Békéscsabára, majd két idényre az időközben feljutó Siófokon folytatta, mielőtt még egy rövid időszakra visszatért volna az ETO-hoz. Összesen 361 bajnoki jutott neki, karrierjét Ausztriában zárta.
A válogatottban 1975-ben debütált, 1977-ig összesen 12-szer játszott, 1983-ban az olimpiai selejtezőkre is őt hívták meg, valamint elvitték az 1978-as világbajnokságra, bár pályára nem lépett.
