We sat down and spoke to new signing David Barczi about the season ahead and his career to date.
– You became a professional player at Ujpest, but very few people know that your a countryside boy. How did you end up becoming a footballer?
– Just like the majority of young boys, my father started teaching me to play football. I played for Tabon, Andocs and in Kaposvar with Mézga football school – Andras Gosztonyi was a team mate of mine. I was invited to Ujpest after a youth tournament. I was perhaps 12 years old at the time.
– How difficult was it to adjust at such a young age?
– It was not easy, but a good group gelled together in a short period of time. Oliver Nagy, Zsolt Korcsmár and Zoltan Stieber all helped each other, which got us through this period, and we are still friends up until today.
– They were teenagers in the first division or are playing abroad, while you had to wait a little longer to make your debut. Were you frustrated because of this?
– We were very close, which is why I was delighted for them. I was not nervous and I was still young at heart, so I knew that if I continue the hard work, my chance would come sooner or later. It was under Geza Meszoly that I was given lots of playing time, and the Ujpest squad was quite a strong one.
– You had a successful start before injuries hampered you. There was also a period abroad in Belgium.
– It was a very hard period for me. They could not really say what the problem was for quite a while, and I was able to play in one or two games, before I had to have treatment again. Fortunately those problems are now long behind me and I am totally OK.
– You then moved to DVTK, where you left them in May after 3 seasons. How did they accept you in Miskolc?
– I had half heard a few things but I did not really focus on it. I generally am positive type of person and I wanted to prove that after my spell in Belgium, I could again show what I was capable of at DVTK. I was clear from a career point of view that the fate was large and we enjoyed a couple of successes there.
– We hope that there will be many successes in a Vidi shirt – including the league title, as well as the Hungarian cup, which is also a target. Is it hard to perform under such targets?
– If you think about it then you soon realise that the task in hand is very serious here as a player. The big targets motivate me and I do not consider it a pressure.
– Henning Berg and his coaching staff were there for your first training session. How are you getting along with them?
– Very good, the coach staff as people are very sympathetic, and everything is done in harmony. Perhaps it cannot be seen from the outside, but there is a very serious group behind the team. Everyone does their job professionally, which helps the players.
– If someone searches you on the internet, they will find a video that includes goals, assists and some good dribbling skills. What is needed to be able to produce this in each game?
– I spoke about this with the manager before the start of the season. He told me what he wanted to achieve, and that I should have the required confidence, which would allow these moves and dribbles that would help the team. You need to also work really hard to be fully confident, which I am clear about. I am pleased that he said this and this will only help me from within.
