"The Spanish have won the cup, but Videoton have won at the Bernabeu" - is how the sports journals described the events of the second leg UEFA cup final. Very few sides can claim to have won at the fearful home of the footballing giants.

It was not only the Videoton supporters, but those who love Hungarian football, who recognized from the outside the amazing fete that saw history created, with the Fehervar side reaching the UEFA Cup final of the 1984-85 season. Ferenc Kovacs' side had beaten Dukla, PSG, Partizan, Manchester United and Zseljeznicsar to reach the final and a two legged match with Real Madrid.

There were 12 legendary matches, or even 13 if you include the second leg against PSG, which resulted in the match being stopped in the 67th minute as a result of the thick fog. The game was replayed a day later. Each match brought its own hero, and every game was memorable for its own reasons. Several legends have since gone on to describe those matches in their own way, which is not by accident as no other Hungarian football team has managed to reach the final since the heady days of 1985.

Everyone had expected Italian side Inter to be in the UEFA cup final, having beaten Real Madrid 2-0 at home in the first leg of the semi-final. The Spaniards came back in the return leg to win 3-0 and reach the final where they would meet the side from Szekesfehervar. That Real side was built on the back of the national sides European Championship runners up success of 1984. There were star names littered in that side including:  Chendo, Sanchis, Camacho, Gallego, Michel, Butragueno, Juanito and Santillana. Argentinian World cup star Jorge Valdano and German legend Uli Stielike were also part of that UEFA cup winning side. 

The first leg had ended with a comfortable 3-0 win for the Spanish team in Fehervar. There was a minor miracle in the return leg. Majer, who had been fighting against an injury played in the second leg and the winger ended up playing a major part of that success. The 8th minute of the match saw defender Vegh pull down Butragueno in the box, but keeper Peter Disztl saved the resulting penalty from Valdano. There was further pressure from the Madrid side including a 76th minute goal from Santillana, which was flagged offside by the match officials. The miracle arrived in the 86th minute: "Wittmann went down the right wing and his cross rebounded off Sanchis, for the arriving Majer to hit a first time shot in to the back of the net." Butragueno also had an effort ruled offside in the last moments of the game, but the final result was a 0-1 win for Videoton at the home of the Spanish giants.

No other Hungarian side has managed to equal that success since 1985.

Top goalscorer during that UEFA cup season were Jozsef Szabo and Edin Bahtic (Zeljeznicar) who both scored 7 each. They were followed by stars such as Gary Bannister (QPR), who scored 6 goals and Marco Van Basten (Ajax) with 5 goals.  Karl-Heinz Rummenige (Inter) and Carlos Santillana (Real) also featured among the goalscorers.
