Maribor lose out in the Super Cup final

Maribor lose out on a penalty shoot out following a 0-0 draw

NK Maribor, Videoton's opponents in next weeks Europa League game, were in action on Friday night in the Slovenian Super Cup Final against FC Luka Koper. Maribor lined up with Pridigar - Mejac, Anđelkovic, Rajcevic, Viler - Bacinovic, Mertelj, Jelic (Mezga 55.), Pavlicic (Cvijanovic 55.) - Tavares, Bunderla (Volas 72.) Manager Darko Milanic was missing several players, with both Saud Filekovic and Elvedin Dzinic still not available following their participation in the South Africa World cup. Maribor also bought in a player on Thursday, but he also didn't play in the match.

Maribor have been active in the transfer market, especially in the second half of the week. They have brought in two youngsters from NK Interblock Ljubljana, Robert Beric and Josip IIicic. Beric, who is 19 years old, is a great talent, with the young striker already appearing in 34 first division games. He has scored in 12 of those games, which has seen Tottenham Hotspurs become interested in the player. Beric chose to move to Maribor so that he could play on a regular basis. IIicic is 22 and has scored 12 times in a total of 54 matches in the Slovenian league. Both players have committed themselves to the club on 3 year contracts.

Back to Friday nights Super Cup final, which was played at a good pace, with both sides having good chances to go ahead. The post was hit 3 times during the 90 minutes and extra time period. Mezga struck the woodwork after 59 minutes, while Mertelj did the same after 98 minutes. The final went down to penalties in the end to set up an exciting finish. In the end it was Koper who managed to keep their nerves to win the shootout and lift the domestic Super Cup.
