Mihaly Lantos continued as head coach and there were several arrivals and departures in the first team squad. Striker Janos Ferencz came in as did keeper Arnold Eller. Midfielder Janos Nagy switched to Vidi from Kecskemet together with forward Ferenc Feher and another midfielder Gyorgy Toth. Tamas Preszeller and Imre Vadasz were promoted from the youth set-up. 

Departures included Lajos Garamvolgyi and Csaba Brettner. They were joined by Lajos Florian, Sandor Olajos, Lajos Porrogi and Janos Nagy. Forward Jozsef Ress became went on military duty during the summer but did not return to the club when that was completed. Tamas Szalmasy ended his playing career and would later become technical manager and then Managing Director as well as youth team manager at the football club.

Pre-season in followed by a good start

There were the usual amount of friendly games arranged over the summer. Those included a 2-0 win over Torpedo Moscow with goals coming from Szabo and Novath. Burcsa scored Vidi's goal in the 1-1 draw with Plasztika Nyitra. The season started with a win and further wins. Raba ETO were defeated 2-0 thanks to a double from Szabo. Another two goals from Szabo and a further one from Burcsa saw Vidi home to a 3-0 win over Dunaujvaros. The team travelled to Ujpest in week 3 of the new season. Ujpest had been impressive on their home pitch for five years, which gave that added motivation for the side. Videoton produced a surprise for the Budapest club with a 4-2 win and goals that day coming from Burcsa (2), Szabo and Majer. 

Things slowed down after that good win and draws against Debrecen (1-1), Ferencvaros (2-2) and MAV Elore (0-0), saw points dropped. There were also two defeats mixed in and a heavy 5-1 loss to Vasas. Injuries also affected the team. There were two injured players in the match against Ferencvaros. Szabo and Ferencz were forced off and that was a major blow to Vidi. 

The performances picked up over the second half of spring. There were four consecutive wins for the side against DVTK 3-1, Salgotarjan 1-0, MTK 4-2 and Pecs 6-0. That meant top place after 12 games of the season being played. Sadly the form could not be maintained in the remaining 5 games of autumn. A very heavy 7-1 defeat to Pecs was the most painful as Videoton would have won the autumn season with a 1-0 win but had to make do with 4th place and 21 points.

The team did not continue their good start

Videoton travelled to the middle east and Iraq during the winter pre-season. Industrial Iraq were beaten 2-1 but the national airforce side did win 2-1. The team returned home and beat Inter Bratislava 2-0 and Skoda Plezent 2-1.

The spring season did not start too convincingly as the autumn one had. Vidi and Ujpest played out a 0-0 draw and there was another 1-1 draw that followed against Debrecen. Vasas were beaten 1-0 at home and perhaps the game of the season saw a 5-2 win away at the home of Ferencvaros. Week 22 resulted in a 3-0 loss to MAV Elore and a further 2-0 defeat against MTK. There were scattered wins over Salgotarjan 2-0, Pecs 4-0 and Bekescsaba 1-0. That win helped move the team back up to second in the league table. They would keep that position until week 33 of the campaign.

The team travelled to Budapest in the final match of the season and a game against Volan. There were high hopes as a 1-0 win would have seen a third place finish and a 2-0 victory a second place runners up position. Niether result was achieved as a 1-0 defeat resulted in the team missing out on the UEFA cup and ending the 1979-80 season in fourth place.

There was a single game in the MNK cup and the 1-1 draw with Mohacs Vemed meant that they did not make it through to the final 64 of the cup.
