Season in review: 1980-81

A great performance over the autumn saw a first place finish going into the spring season. However, a poorer second half ended with a 4th place finish.

Mihaly Lantos' three year contract with the club ended in the summer and he departed to Zalaegerszeg. Former manager Jozsef Verebes replaced him on the bench and he was assisted by Gabor Hartyani. He would go on to be assistant over a 12 year unbroken spell. The new manager quickly changed things and was not afraid to bring players from the youth team.

There were several changes to the squad and defender Jozsef Csuhay arrived with midfielder Laszlo Ambrus. Defender Laszlo Disztl and Janos Toth were promoted from the youth team together with Attila Szirjak as the new season approached.

There were key players that also left for pastures new. Defender Jozsef Kovacs announced that he would no longer play for Videoton. Keeper Laszlo Kovacs also left with defender Tamas Preszeller, forward Ferenc Feher and midfielder Gyorgy Toth. Defender Gabor Fejes called his playing career a day and retired.

Top of the division going into the winter break

The team produced a very good autumn with a 4-0 season opening win over Csepel. Vidi would lose just twice over the first half of the season and win 9 of their 10 home league matches. Ferencvaros were beaten 1-0 at the Sostoi stadium, but there were big wins over Volan (7-2) with two goals each coming from Novath, Tieber and Burcsa.

Videoton FC ended the autumn in top place with 30 points and a one point lead over Ferencvaros. The 20 league games saw 13 wins, 4 draws and 3 defeats.

Good winter pre-season is followed by a bad spring

The winter pre-season was promising for the team as they prepared for the spring.

Many were expecting Videoton to be champions. This confidence would later go on to prove to be a smack in the face for all connected with the club.

The team travelled to Ferencvaros in the first game of spring. That saw the top two come face-to-face and manager Verebes had predicted a win for the team. Sadly, he would not be proven correct and the 3-1 defeat to Ferencvaors was followed up by further loses to Debrecen (1-0) and Bekescsaba (2-0). That saw the team slide down to fourth in the league table.

The remaining eleven games produced just six wins and two draws together with a further three defeats. The 44 points were only good enough to end just outside the top three in fourth place. That was however, enough to mean UEFA cup football once again after a wait of five years.

The team went out of the MNK cup at the round two stage. Volan went beaten thanks to a 2-0 win but Győri MAV would end up knocking Vidi out by a 2-1 scoreline.
