1976. Október 12. 12:12  -  David Rechnitzer
Season in review: 1976-77

The team performed well in the UEFA Cup but not that well in the league. Many felt that the team had gone as far as it could and things needed to be rebuilt.

The most important change ahead of the new season was that the Hungarian FA decided to increase the amount of teams in the NBI. The change meant that 18 teams would compete for the league title. That resulted in the previous season relegated sides escaping the drop to the second division. Manager Ferenc Kovacs continued to enjoy the trust of the clubs management.

Vidi signed Gyozo Burcsa and youth players Lajos Porrogi and Tibor Nagy moved up. Defender Gabor Hartyani called his playing career a day and striker Laszlo Kuti moved out to Dunaujvaros.

The enthusiasm from the season before remained

Vidi took part in the Duna 76' cup, which included Ferencvaros and Vojvodina. Fradi were defeated 3-2 but Videoton lost to the hosts Vojvodina by a 2-0 scoreline. The disappointment of the season before meant that it would be a hard job to shake the team up for the new campaign. A lack of motivation and enthusiasm were missing during pre-season. This resulted in a poor autumn season for the team. The opening game saw a 1-0 defeat at the home of DVTK. The 3-0 win over Dunaujvaros was followed by a 4-2 loss at Vasas. There was another big home win over Bekescsaba in a match that ended 5-2. Goals from Majer (2), Baranyi, Nagy, Fejes, Wollek and Tieber gave Vidi a 7-0 win over Szeged side SZEOL.

The autumn season closed with 20 points on the board from the 9 wins, 2 draws and 6 defeats.

A good performance in the UEFA Cup

The UEFA Cup kicked off during the middle of the autumn season. Turkish side Fenerbahce were the opponents and Vidi travelled out to Istanbul for the first leg. Ferenc Kovacs' side lost that game 2-1 and the second leg at the Sostoi stadium was played in front of a full house. A good performance saw the team ease to a 4-0 win to progress to the next round.

FC Wacker were waiting in the second round. There was a 1-1 draw away in Austria that meant Vidi would go into the second leg well placed. The Innsbruck side failed to score in Fehervar and a goal from Janos Nagy secured a 1-0 win to make it through to the third round.

FC Magdeburg were the opponents in the final 16 of the cup. Vidi were comfortably beaten 5-0 in Germany and that meant a mountain to climb in the return leg. Videoton won 1-0 but the 5-1 aggregate score resulted in the team going out of the UEFA Cup.

The tempo does not return for the spring

The spring season started very poorly. The team suffered a 1-0 defeat at Kaposvar and followed that up with a 3-3 draw with Budapest Honved. A 2-1 defeat away in Zalaegerszeg did not improve things with Vidi's goal coming through an own goal in that game.

The first win arrived in week 3 of the spring with goals from Tieber, Nagy and Majer earning a 3-1 victory over Vasas. There was another win against Raba ETO, which followed the Vasas win. The continuation did not go too well with Dorogi AC 2-1, Csepel 2-0 and Bekescsaba 3-0 all beating the red and blues. Even more disappointing was that there was hardly a good performance put in by the team in those games. The feeling grew towards the end of the season that the team had gone as far as it could and that a new team would have to be built.

A total of 35 points were picked up with 14 wins, 7 draws and 13 defeats securing a 6th place finish.
