The club changed manager ahead of season 1977-78. Mihaly Lantos was appointed to take over the running of the first team. He was assisted by Miklos Janki. Striker Jozsef Szabo was signed over the summer and keeper Peter Disztl moved up from the youth team together with defender Csaba Brettner, striker Gyorgy Novath and midfielder Sandor Olajos. 

The first job for Mihaly Lantos was to drop forward Tibor Wollek and Tamas Szalmasy from the first team. Midfielder Janos Nagy was another to not feature in the first team set-up. Tibor Wollek decided to end his playing career. Karoly Bruder and Sandor Jankovics left the club together with keeper Istvan Szabo.

Cup success during pre-season

Vidi took part in the Balaton cup during the summer break. There were 3 wins over ZTE (1-0), Kaposvar (1-0) and Tatabanya (4-1) as well as a 1-1 draw with MAV Elore. The team won the cup and went into the new season full of hope. 

There was also a game in Spain and a 4-1 defeat to Gijon as well as a 2-2 draw against Guimares.

Very good Autumn

The new season started with a 1-0 loss away at Tatabanya. There was a mixed bag of results until the 10th league game of the campaign. SZEOL were defeat 5-1 thanks to goals from Majer (2), Szabo, Tieber and Burcsa. There was also a good 6-0 win over Haladas with goals in that game coming from Majer (3), Szabo, Burcsa and Karsai. 

The team moved forward nicely during the second half of autumn. They would go on to draw three games in the remainder of the season against Vasas (2-2), Honved (0-0) and Csepel (2-2). The other matches all resulted in wins for the team including high scoring games like the 5-2 win over MAV Elore and a 6-4 win over Ujpest Dozsa. 

It is worth picking out the home game with Kaposvar. That game saw the debut in goal of Peter Disztl in what was the keepers first match in the NBI. His debut did not go too well as he remembers back to that match: "They told me to prepare to go on with 10 minutes left of the match. We were leading 4-1 at that point. I quickly conceded 2 goals. The Nemzeti Sport wrote in the following days newspaper that Disztl can only be pleased that things can only improve from here on. Luckily they were correct."

The team went into the winter with 25 points collected to be in second place and just a point behind first place Ujpest Dozsa. Autumn saw 10 wins, 5 draws and 3 defeats. 

Team fails to keep the tempo going

Sadly the spring would not be as good as the autumn one had been. The forward line did not fire on full cylinders as the autumn had seen Majer, Szabo and Tieber all score 30 goals between them. There would be just 14 goals over the spring. 

There were good wins including the 4-0 win over Bekescsaba (Nagy (2), Burcsa and Fejes), 4-2 against Pecs (Szalmasy (2), Szabo, Majer) and a 4-1 win against Tatabanya (Szabo (2), Burcsa and Majer). However, the performances would not be enough to keep second place in the league. It would not even be enough for a third place finish. The team just failed to collect a top 3 finish with fourth place secured with the 45 points.
