Gyereksarok371Klubunk saját nevelésű játékosa először egy 1997-es edzőmeccsen, mindössze 17 évesen debütált a felnőtt csapatban, 1998-tól kezdve pedig alapembernek számított csapatunknál, ahol a kor és klubunk akkori viszonyai közt kirívóan hosszú időt töltött el, végül 2005-ben 129 NB I-es mérkőzéssel a lábaiban szabadon igazolhatóvá vált. Felcsútra szerződött, majd 2008-ban a Pécs igazolta le, később négy évet töltött a ZTE-nél, végül pedig karrierje szép lezárásaként épp a Vidi ellen játszotta utolsó élvonalbeli mérkőzését, méghozzá a Dunaújváros színeiben 2014 decemberében.
Karrierje legnagyobb sikerei között szerepel a 2001-es Magyar Kupa-finálé, ahová akkor klubunk történetében másodszor sikerült bejutnunk. Ennek fontos szereplője volt Szalai is, aki a Debrecen ellen elveszített döntőn is szóhoz jutott.
