Kenan Kodro: I am as hungry for success as the whole club

The Bosnian striker arrived in Székesfehérvár very motivated and struck twice on his debut.

Scoring goals was genetically in Kenan Kodro's genes, as his father Meho Kodro was a goal scorer for Real Sociedad and FC Barcelona, among others, but his family name alone would not have got him to La Liga and the Bundesliga, and we spoke to him about his career and motivation after his arrival at Vidi.

As a large part of your childhood was spent in the 90s, your name brought two things to mind: the Barcelona striker Meho Kodro from Amiga's Sensible World of Soccer, and one of the main characters in the then popular American series Kenan and Kel.

The Nickelodeon series was also shown in Spain, but I don't have much to say about it, but I have more to say about Meho Kodro. I'm very proud of what my father achieved, he played football at the highest level, and I learned a lot from him, and I'm still learning from him today.

I understand he also coached Real Sociedad's second team.

That's right, I was 16 when he became my coach. I think it was harder for him, but in hindsight I can say it wasn't easy for me either. There are 25-30 talented youngsters there, and in football there's a lot of talk about a lot of things... It was a bit like walking around with a backpack full of stones, because everyone in town associated him with the name Kodro because of his previous success. The game went well later on, it's always easier when your performance on the pitch and your actions speak for you. Anyway, I certainly handled it better in my later years, I'd be happy to work with him if I had the chance, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to have their dad as their coach when they're young (laughter).

And you have another teammate like him. Do you know who?

Sadly I do not.

Former coach of Palko Dárdai...

Ah, Pal Dárdai in Hertha. When I was at Mainz we played against him, and I remember Bilbao were once in the same group in the Europa League as Hertha, although I wasn't part of the team then.

You came to Mainz from Pamplona, where you had played well, and it was there that you finally made your debut in the Spanish top flight, not at Sociedad. Why did that happen?

It was nice to get away from home for a while, take a deep breath and shed the burden of my family name that I just mentioned. At Osasuna, I felt the confidence from the first minute, the change of environment was good.

Then came the aforementioned German adventure, and you also played in Switzerland and Denmark. What do you remember most?

It's never easy to leave home, but I felt then, and still do, that it was the best decision for my career.  In the countries you mentioned, I met new people, languages and cultures, I learned a lot everywhere. When I finish my career, it will be nice to look back on these times.

You obviously think of the Basque Country as home, but you have also played nine times for the Bosnian national team and your parents are Bosnians. What identity did you develop as a youngster?

I'm very proud of both my Bosnian and Basque origins, I couldn't choose between the two. We speak Bosnian at home of course, I used to spend summers there with my grandparents, so Bosnia is always in my heart. However, my close family, my girlfriend - who will soon follow me to Hungary - my friends who live in Spain, I grew up there, I went to school there and of course I started playing football there, so I imagine my future there. But for now, obviously, I'm just concentrating on football and Vidi.

What was it like to play for the pride of the Basque Country, Athletic Bilbao?

Something very special. I'm sure many of you know that Athletic only allow players of Basque origin to play, but they are still in La Liga and regularly participate in European cups. A home match day in front of 40-50,000 people...special feeling, Plus the team spirit is extraordinary, as everyone in the dressing room is Basque.

How much did you know about Vidi before you signed your contract?

Armin Hodzic and Anel Hadzic have also told me a lot about the club, I've known them from the national team for a long time. I really liked what they said about Vidi, the city and the people here. And when the negotiations started, István Sallói and Imre Szabics presented me with very concrete and sympathetic plans. I am very pleased that the club is as hungry for success as I am. I am confident that I can repay the trust.

What does Kenan Kodro do when he is not training or playing in matches?

I like watching action and historical films, I guess you could say I'm a person that loves to be at home. And if I really want to switch off completely, I go out on the golf course and hit the golf ball for two or three hours. I don't even think about football. But that's the only time (laughter)!
