Hungary and Ireland play out a 0-0 friendly draw

Hungary played their final friendly game before the start of the Euro Championships.

On Tuesday evening, the Hungarian national team played their last pre-European Championship match against Ireland at the Szusza Ferenc Stadium in Budapest. Our national team played in front of a full house.

Manager Marco Rossi chose: Gulácsi - Kecskés, Orbán, Szalai A. - Bolla, Kleinheisler, Schafer, Nagy Á., Fiola - Szalai Á., Varga R. in his starting line-up with two Vidi players among them. The visitors created the first chance, with a 6th minute Egan's header rattling the crossbar. A couple of minutes later, Bolla's cross was fired just wide by Kleinheisler. In the 15th minute, Fiola's ball in went inches over the head of Bolla in the middle. Hungary dominated the game but had to wait until the 40th minute for the biggest chance of the game. Attila Szalai crossed from the left wing and the tall Ádám Szalai's header was saved really well by the Irish goalkeeper of Nigerian origin, Bazunu.

In the second half Bolla did not come back out on to the pitch, but Fiola was still there and in the 63rd minute Nego came on as well, replacing our former player Kleinheisler. A few minutes earlier, the Irish substitute keeper, who had come on at half-time, had made a brilliant save from Ádám Szalai's 16-metre shot.  It was the 71st minute when Fiola tried a shot from 18 metres out, but he missed the target. Ten minutes before the end, Paks' top scorer János Hahn replaced Fiola. In the 82nd minute, McClean's close-range header was well saved by Hungarian substitute keeper Ádám Bogdán. At the other end, Kecskés' cross was headed goalwards by Szalai, Kelleher managing to save well. After the resulting corner, Attila Szalai threatened with his foot, but the Irish goalkeeper saved again. In the 87th minute, Ádám Szalai curled a 17-metre shot inches wide of the goal. In the 90th minute, Ogbene fired a powerful shot into the side netting from close range, and a minute later Schön had a pass from Nego towards goal from 18 yards, but Kelleher saved that shot too, leaving the final score 0-0.

The Hungarian national team will start their European Championship campaign on 15 June against Portugal at home, in the Puskás Arena.
