17 May 2006. Hungarian Cup Final
"Székesfehérvár was just waiting for this" - is how the Nemzeti Sport issue reported the news on the May 18, 2006. It is true that the football fans of Fehérvár have been waiting for a really big success since 1985, which was more than 21 years, since in the 1990s and early 2000s with the supporters of Fehérvár not having too much pleasure.
Our club had reached the finals of the Hungarian Cup in both 1982 and 2001 as well, but first Újpesti Dózsa and then DVSC proved to be better than us. We played our third Hungarian Cup final against Vasas, and the venue was the FTC stadium n Budapest, just like five years earlier.
We entered the Hungarian Cup in the second round. In September we played against Kozármisleny and then Baktalórántháza, defeating the former 3-2 and the latter 2-0. In the eighth round, we played out a 1-1 draw against MTK at home, but then won 2-1 away, so we made it into the final eight.
In the spring we won 2-1 at the home of Kaposvár, and then 3-1 at the Sóstó, so we were already in the final four with a 5-2 aggregate win. In the semi-finals, we faced opponents DVSC. We won 1-0 in Debrecen and played out a 2-2 result at home, so after five years, we reached the final of the Hungarian Cup again, moreover, defeating the team that we had lost to in the final in 2001.
Vasas were waiting in the Cup Final and their head coach Attila Pintér led his team to the cup final for the third time in a row and was preparing for his third victory. In 2004 he won 3-1 against Honvéd and then with FTC, a year later - in Székesfehérvár - as the head coach of Sopron, his former team enjoyed a 5-1 victory against the FTC.
Vasas included several familiar faces ten years ago - both on the bench and on the pitch. The goalkeeping coach of the Angyalföld side was club legend, Péter Disztl, at that time, Róbert Waltner was included in the starting team for the Budapest side.
Three of our players were also forced to watch the final from the stands due to serving bans. Besides Györök and Farkas, Vidi manager Aurél Csertői could not count on our number one goalkeeper, Daniel Tudor. He was replaced in the final by Zsolt Sebők, who came to Székesfehérvár two years earlier, in 2004, but in the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons had only played in 6 league matches in our goal. Nevertheless, he later became one of the heroes of the final.
The match was in the 25th minute when Vasas took the lead with a goal from former Fehérvár striker, Waltner, and after the first half they were able to go into the dressing room with a 1-0 lead. In the first minute of the second half, Illés Sitku equalized, and Schwarz then gave us the lead in the 57th minute.
Towards the end of the game, Vasas were able to put more and more pressure on our team, and in the 84th minute Zsolt Balog levelled to make it 2-2 with a goal from close range. Schwarz could have scored the winning goal in the 90th minute, but his close header hit the goal post, resulting in extra time being played, which did not produce any further goals.
The penalty shootout followed: Sitku hit his kick into the bottom right (1-0) but Vasas didn't make a mistake (1-1). The second Vidi kick saw Ferenc Horváth, who came onto the pitch a few minutes earlier as a substitute, confidently scored from his penalty (2-1), and Csordás did the same on the other side (2-2). Koller and Gyánó also scored to make it (3-3). The first to make a mistake was Dajic, but Janjic couldn't score either, so the score remained at 3-3 after four penalties. Csizmadia shot the ball into the left corner and András Tóth into the top right (4-4), then Kuttor blasted under the bar and Zováth didn't make a mistake either (5-5). Bozic rolled it into the bottom right (6-5), but Molnár's shot was kept out by Sebők, so for the first time in our history we were able to lift the Hungarian Cup!
