Istvan Kovacs: We have a strong squad, which is important for the series of matches ahead

The international midfielder spoke to the Vidi website about the games ahead.

- Last week, under strict health rules, but you were finally able to start training together again. How do you feel on the pitch and how was the first week of training after the forced break?

I think I can also say on behalf of the others that everyone is very happy to be able to take part in joint training again. It has been very stressful especially mentally for the last month and a half. Our lives are now more and more like they were before the pandemic. Today was more about football. Of course, nothing is the same as it was two or three months ago, for example, I still couldn’t get used to training in gloves. We also go for tests regularly, so the health protocol is very strict, but we know it’s in our best interest. At the same time, it is a great pleasure that we really have training with the ball every day now, and we will even play a friendly match at the weekend. I think I have never before waited so long for a friendly match.

- From the end of May, there will be no shortage of matches, as you will have two matches every week for a good month.

I don't even see the main problem in the busy program itself, as we have already tasted what it is like to play two games a week for a longer period of time during our EL appearances. Now, however, a longer forced shutdown will be followed by a serious series of games, which we need to prepare for in a relatively short amount of time. In addition, every match will have a serious stake, either in terms of the Hungarian Cup or the league title. Fortunately, we have a strong playing squad, which is very important in order to succeed in such a series of matches as well. It will also be extremely important which teams will be best able to adapt to unusual circumstances. For my part, I expect a lot of surprises in the continuation of the season.

- If all goes well, there will be 11 games waiting for you along with the cup final - all behind closed doors. How will you all prepare for this?

Now that the curfew has been lifted in recent days, I have been able to spend more and more time in the city and meet a lot of fans. I have lived in Székesfehérvár for a long time and consider the city as my home. I know what Vidi means to the city and the people living here and I feel this every time I am among them. I know that although they will not be able to be there in the stadium in person, they will support us from home in the same way, pushing us onto success, and we will have a responsibility to get the best possible result on the pitch for them and the city. So far I have had the opportunity to play in a behind closed doors match for the national team, it was a horrible experience, but in the current situation, everyone is happy to be able to play matches at all. At the same time, I am confident that the stadiums will be filled with fans again in the foreseeable future.
