Peter Simek: Lengthy interview at 40

He came through the Vidi youth system, which was followed by a successful playing career. He is now U17 youth team coach at the club.

- You returned back to the club around two years ago. You now coach the U17 side while also appearing on the M4 Sport TV channel as an analyst. Is it difficult to juggle these two roles?

It is not at all hard even if these two roles take up a lot of time. I take training sessions from Monday to Friday while my U17 side plays a league game on a Saturday. Once I have finished at Vidi, I spend Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening working for the TV channel.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family who always give me their full backing. I do not always manage to spend the right amount of time with them. Coming back to my work and I really do enjoy all of the things that I have learned as a coach. I am still learning even today. This also helps me in my TV work whether it is as a commentator or communicating my thoughts.

- When you started to feel that your playing career was nearing the end, which role did you prepare for more? To be a coach or to be a commentator?

Unfortunately I had several injuries during my career, which is why I started to think about my next step at an early stage. I always knew that I wanted to continue working in football. However, I did not have concrete plans about being a coach or a manager in the sport. Football was my life as a kid. I ended my playing career at Vasas in 2013. I took my UEFA B badge before hanging up my boots. That allowed me to start working in the Ujpest youth system. I helped out in the U15 side there. I had over 300 NB I matches behind me but actually planning a coaching session was a totally different thing. I learned so much and developed a lot. I started working for the TV a few years later. It got into TV and they had asked Director of Football Zoltan Kovacs whether he knew anyone with Vidi roots that could try themselves out as a commentator for the Vidi - Csukariscski EL game. He thought of me and I was pleased to accept the request. That was almost four years ago and I really enjoy this work.

- Working as a youth coach for Vidi gives you a better overview of the club from the inside. Does this make it easier or harder for you in your TV work if your asked about a Vidi game?

This is a very interesting question. I do not have to think any deeper or choose my words more carefully. Nobody at the club or in the TV ask for this to be the case. Nobody wants me to handle Vidi any differently than another club. I am totally independent and the two things are separate.

- Football will give you a nice present on Saturday with two of your main clubs facing each other in a game. What are your thoughts on the Ujpest - Vidi game?

Yes, it is true and I will be working on the game. A person always has emotions with clubs that they played for in the past and where the supporters liked them. It is a normal thing. I will put my feelings to one side. I am sure it will be an interesting game on Saturday evening. Ujpest performed poorly in their game at Debrecen, which they lost 4-0. Although Vidi dropped two points in the first game of the spring, it means both clubs need to get the 3 points. It will be a very tactical game.

- Can you imagine yourself in 10 years time celebrating your 50th birthday as a manager of a first division club?

Let things go along nicely. I am following my targets and I want to get my UEFA "PRO" license. I hope that I will do that shortly. Obtaining this license is a difficult and serious thing. It is not impossible that I will be a manager of a first division side in 10 years time but it can also happen that I remain within youth team football as a coach. I am very motivated but do not know where I will be in 10 years time.

Happy Birthday Peter!
