Zoltan Kovacs: We have to play with more discipline if we are to reach our targets

We spoke with the Director of Football as the half way stage of the league season comes to an end.

"The last few weeks were very difficult ones for me. We can talk about a nice period looking back at the autumn. This includes the way the team played, but we did not manage to close the half season suitably. We performed well in both the domestic league and in Europe. The team did well right up until the final two weeks. We again went out of the Hungarian cup against lower league opponents, with Vac deserving to go through. We then closed the league with two defeats. At times like these, we all have to live with criticism. It does not count that we led the league table for 12 rounds, and we do not receive awards for that. The same applies that we did not receive an award for ending the first half of last season in top place. It is true that we managed to achieve that last year by winning fewer points. However, nobody sat back because of that. Going back to the final two weeks: We cannot allow this to pass without the club commenting on this. We all have to take a bigger amount of responsibility when we do not win each game. I felt that the cup defeat to Vac would result in the players going out for the final two league games with an added strength to win. Sadly we did not perform well in the first half of our match against Ferencvaros. We should have comfortably picked up 3 points against Haladas, but we ended up trying to play crowd entertaining football, which was not too pleasing. The home side ended up winning at the end in what was a balanced game, despite the above." - commented Zoltan Kovacs, who we ask the reasons for the poor run at the end of the first half of the season.

"We have played five competitive games more than our rivals during the first half of the season. This is a fact that we tired towards the end. You could see on some of the players that they were not too fresh as they had been during the season. However, we cannot put all the reasons on this. I do not want to and we would only fool ourselves. We have realised which players we can count on and the players that we cannot. I would like to strengthen the squad further during the winter break. The supporters should also expect there to be players leaving. You can clearly see that we have a strong spine and we would like to strengthen them with determined effective players. I would now like to take this opportunity to thank owner Istvan Garancsi for his backing. He really has provided everything  for us to be able to work. I would also naturally like to thank the supporters that travelled away to both our home games in Felcsut and actual away matches. I hope that they do not have to wait too long until the moment comes when they can return with the team to the Sosto stadium.

We also asked the Director of football about the high amount of yellow and red cards picked up.

"We discussed this topic in our last discussion. As I mentioned that match officials could be expected to protect players from being provoked and from deliberate attacks. In the same way, I expect the players to be partners with the match officials and to handle these situations better. We need to behave suitably on the pitch and also off it. The players who fight for serious targets are able to handle this, even if the pressure is great. If we had managed to do this, then we would not have gone into the final league game with 3 important players missing for example. But it is not only about the final league game. Sadly there was a tendency throughout that suspensions meant we could not play the same starting side twice. We need to change in this area in the future. We need to play with discipline if we are to be successful. Players missing unnecessarily will end up costing us points."
