Hungary qualify for the European Championships after a gap of 44 years

Hungary complete a home and away win double to qualify 3-1 on aggregate against Norway.

Hungary won both of their play off matches against Norway. That made sure of qualification in the summer of 2016 for the first time since 1972.

The group stage matches did not start that well back in September 2014 with a 2-1 home defeat against Northern Ireland. A very good 1-1 draw away in Romania then followed that brought back hope. Faroe Islands were then beaten 1-0 on their home pitch before another home win over Finland. A 0-0 draw in Budapest against Greece was another valuable point. The 2004 European Championship winners had started their group games with 3 defeats and a draw. Hungary travelled to Helsinki and came away with the points following a good 1-0 win. The final four group matches produced 2 draws, a win and a loss.

Several Videoton players took part in the qualification games. Roland Juhasz featured in 9 games and missed just 1 match. Injury forced him out of the qualifier in Belfast against Northern Ireland. Nikolics was the next in line in terms of matches played for his country. He played in 5 games while still a player for Videoton. Gyurcso and Kovacs both played one game, while Lang and Rudolf also represented their country, but at the time they were not contracted to Vidi, but for another club side.

Lang and Kleinheisler both played for Hungary in both the play off games against Norway. Lang played all 180 minutes while "Scholes", as he is nicknamed, scored the winning goal in the first leg match.

Videoton would like to congratulate the Hungarian national team. We would also like to wish them every success next summer in France!
