You were born in Cannes, where you became a professional footballer. How do you remember back to the start of your career?

I played professional football for 5 years for AS Cannes, but spent a total of 11 years at the club, as I started playing football at the age of 11. My father was also a professional player earlier at this club. I then signed for Toulon at the age of 22 where I played together with Hungarian international Gyorgy Bognar.

Your biggest success as a player came with French side Olympique Marseille. You played for them between 1990-1996.

I played in two European cup finals in the colours of Marseille. The first of those was known as the Cup winners cup. We did not manage to win that game against Yugoslavian club Crvena Zvezda. However, I was part of the side that beat Milan 1-0 in 1993. That was an unforgettable feeling and memory for me. We also won the domestic league several times, which was the highlight of my playing career.

You have played together with many World stars for Marseille. Who were the best among them?

I cannot pick one out as there really were great players that I played with. Jean Pierre Papin, Chris Waddle, Fabien Barthez or Rudi Voller would be among the best. I could name others within this list. We won an important cup between us so I like to remember back to this.

You played 30 times for France. You played in each of the European Championship games in 1992, but you were not that happy.

We had won 8 qualification games before the European championship. We had fantastic players in that side. Platini was the captain so we had everything to achieve good results. We started the group matches with two draws. We then faced Denmark, who had come in at a late stage to replace Yugoslavia, and were beaten by them and ended up being knocked out. Perhaps they did not only surprise us but everyone as they ended up winning the tournament.

You are considered as an experienced coach who has managed in several places. What are the main principles that you lay down at the clubs you have been at?

One of the most important questions is what the team does when the ball is with them, and what they do when it is not. Several club today try to gain inspiration from the way Barcelona plays, but we need to be clear with the limitations of everyone. We need to get the best out of the playing squad you have at your disposal. To aggressively defend your area and then hit quick attacks is what I try to build, while also trying to build a team, but we need to be clear with the borders within which we can move.

Which club have you been most successful at in your coaching career to date?

We got promoted with Evian from the third division to the second, and then again to the first division. This was a fantastic period for me and the club. The club and the team pulled together in the same direction, which brought the results. It was a great inspiration as a manager to work with that group.

You have been in Hungary for a few days now. What have your first impressions been of Szekesfehervar and Budapest?

Hungary appears to be a very pleasant and friendly place. Budapest and Szekesfehervar are very significant historical cities. They have a big past and an interesting present time. It is important that a person can work within good surroundings

You will meet the players for the first time on the 15th June. You obviously have knowledge of what to expect. What are your targets for Vidi?

The aim is to defend the title, but what else could it be? I would also like to win the Hungarian cup and do as good as is possible in the Champions League. It is not an easy task for a good team to protect its status, or even improve on it, which is why it is nice. Videoton FC have been developing year after year, and the base and the organization within the club will allow for the targets to be achieved.
