Paco: "The keepers worked impressively throughout the autumn season"

Vidi's goalkeeping coach, who celebrated his 44th birthday on Wednesday, spoke about the current season being a big one for Calatayud. He also mentioned how he was able to deal with the tragic passing of his wife.

- How would you sum up the team’s over the autumn, and especially the performance of the keepers?

I do not think that I need to summarize the teams performance over the autumn, as the results plainly speak for themselves. I am completely satisfied with the goalkeepers. I would also say that perhaps they have worked even better in training than during the spring, but even back then I had no complaints whatsoever. There was no training session or match when somebody did not give 100%. I think the fact that there was a different coaching staff from the summer has also played a role in this. I am very pleased with everything from the autumn season.

- You have known Calatayud for a long time now, having previously seen him keeping goal in the Spanish championship. Do you think that the 35 year old is in the form of his life?

I feel that this season will be a big one for Calatayud. His age also plays a role in this, as he is a very experienced keeper. He has played several hundred games in the Spanish first and second divisions. He shows such panache towards his team mates, that only the best keepers are capable of doing. I am not only satisfied with Calatayud, but also the performance and training of all the other keepers that I worked with throughout the autumn. I am expecting the same attitude from them in the spring.

- How have you been able to get through such a difficult situation for you personally, while managing to fully concentrate on your work?

It is true that the loss of my wife was a serious tragedy in my life. I have always considered myself to be a strong person, and I also have my two daughters, who are worth living for. We will still need lots of time to get over the passing of my wife. There are things in my life that are still worth being happy about. I am thinking here of my work, and that a person either carries out his duties 100%, or not. I now have many ideas in the area of how to develop further, and keep the goalkeeping section together. This Christmas has been a period full of emotion, which I spent totally with my two daughters. It was not only I that lost my wife, they lost their mother.
