Győző Burcsa: "The aim is to develop a new base"

We spoke to Videoton's club director about his experiences so far, the background to the decision to appoint Joan Carrillo, and the plans regarding transfers and the pre-season timetable.

You started working at Vidi a month ago. How would you sum up this period, and also tell us why you chose Juan Carrillo as the new head coach?

A squad was created over recent years, which Paulo Sousa built the basis to according to the playing system that he used. There were several foreign players that were signed to play a role in this, and they were suitable for that system, positions and roles. If we then would have contracted a new head coach who would have wanted to build a totally new base, which would have meant changing 15 players, that would have made our situation impossible, as it is very hard to make so many changes in such a short period of time. We had to find a professional coach that was familiar with the present squad and could also work with them. This is why I made the decision for Joan Carrillo to carry on this project, and those players that had earlier proven that they can play football did not perform to the level expected last season. They will have to now raise their game to the required level, and we also need to create a new basis, which can determine the team's play over the coming period.

What are the key aspects when you look for new signings?

We will only sign players that will help us over the long-term with regards to the spine of the team. They will be young, ambitious players with first division experience. This is why Tamás Horváth came to us from Mezőkövesd and Dinko Trebotic from Zagreb. Naturally we are still currently in negotiations and will soon see the players that we can further strengthen our squad with.

You said earlier that the ratio between Hungarian and foreign players would change in the dressing room. We know that several foreign players are no longer part of the squad, with just one Hungarian player arriving in their place.

The situation is not that easy, with Hungarian players costing much more on the transfer market, than a foreign player of similar quality. If a Hungarian team has a player with serious interest following him, they ask for an amount, which is not payable and considered extremely high in relation to Hungary. At the same time, we have tried to bring in Hungarian players from abroad, either as a permanent transfer or for a loan deal, which have the right mentality to blend in with the others. However, we really need to determine who we are ready to offer serious amounts for.

The 12 day pre-season camp has begun. Why has Austria been chosen and why are the team going for exactly this length of time?

We wanted to choose a place with a cool climate, and Austria is the perfect location for this. The long pre-season period required certain days, which would see the player concentrate just on training. My experience in the game tells me that two weeks is the ideal period to be thinking about, and it will also allow for good work to be carried out.

What can you tell us about the pre-season friendlies?

According to our plans there will be two games at the pre-season training camp.  The first will be a game against an Austrian third division side, to ease the players back in to things. The second match will be more serious against a first division side. We will then play with Paris Saint-Germain after the training camp has ended, and we can be very proud of this, as it is 30 years since we last faced the star French club during our famous run in the UEFA cup.
