Club captain Sandor Gyorgy reflects back on an action packed autumn season
"Autumn for us had two very important series, which were the Europa league and the domestic league itself. I would not say that one was more important than the other, as we took both of them very seriously. We placed the league cup a little more in the background, but I am pleased that those youngsters, who received a chance to show what they could do in those games, did exactly that. They picked up some very good results. The many European games did place a stamp on our league matches, but I do not say this as an excuse, as our aim is for us to play in as many international games as we did this year. We really need to pick up this tempo in the future. This was the first half season for me when I played in so many key games, but I think that this also applies to virtually all of the other players. Taking everything into account, I do feel that we reached some good success, just as the owner said at the end of year dinner, "the whole of Europe got to know the names of Szekesfehervar and Videoton FC over the autumn season again."
"I felt that we did not have the hardest task in the Europa league, when one or two sides put more pressure on us. The most difficult was for us to fully realize those tactics, which the manager thought up for each game. Our playing system places great importance on our physical capabilities. We have to run so much around all areas of the pitch in games. We played in more than 30 key games over the last six months, so we truly felt the tiredness in our legs. The fact that everyone managed to cope with the stamina, suggests that the coaching staff prepared us perfectly for the series of games. This preparation did not begin in the summer training camp, but much earlier. We should think back to the tough games we played back in the training camp last January, in Spain and in February, when we were training in Turkey. Only one team managed to beat us by a big goal difference, and they were Dinamo Kiev. However, we were in the game for the first 60 minutes."
"All of the players developed a lot over the last half year, and I am really happy that the squad are still success hungry. It is enough to just think back to our last key game against Sporting. We had to go out onto the pitch, knowing that whatever the score would be, we could not go through. We had close to 35 key matches in our legs at the time, but everyone could see that against a higher classed side, and in their own stadium, we were able to create the bigger chances. Luck was not with us on the day and we ended up losing 2-1. I did feel, especially in the first half, that we could be proud of the performance we put in. If anyone feels that this team has already reached its maximum capability, then that is a big mistake. We still have room to develop; or rather we can still achieve bigger results than we already have. Naturally we have plenty of hard work ahead of us. We continue along the road that we have begun, and our next aim cannot be anything other than to win the championship in the spring."
"The away game at Trabzonspor was my favourite match over the autumn period. Balazs Toth spoke a lot before the game about just how fanatical their supporters were. At the start of the game when we went out onto the pitch, the noise was deafening with plenty of whistles. The more than 20,000 supporters could sense that we were not playing at home, and that we should be good guests, and concede goals, before nicely returning home. The same 20,000 clapped us off the pitch 90 minutes later. We played with lots of maturity in Turkey, which the Trabzon players did not count on, or their supporters. There is no bigger recognition than the same supporters standing up to clap us, having booed us an hour and a half earlier. The best thing of all was to have done this in a country, where the supporters adore football, and had probably never even heard the name of Videoton previously. This game was a little bit more special for this reason, but naturally all of the Europa league games bring a smile, as we think back to them. The same also applies to those games where we did not win. I would also take my hat off to the supporters, who really helped us to this success. We achieved these fantastic results together, and we can both be proud of this." explained club captain Sandor Gyorgy to vidi.hu.
