Videoton FC showed the required character to secure a last minute winner, which they deserved based on the way they played and attacked. It may have been cruel luck on the visitors, who came to defend with their Christmas tree formation. Vidi saw both teams above them win their games, and the three points gained on Sunday evening now means the red and blues have opened up an eight point gap on fourth placed Honved. Paulo Sousa chose a fairly settled side, knowing that his team would need to show plenty of patience to break down a Honved side, which surprisingly lost 4-1 at home to Kecskemet last weekend, and who needed to put in a performance for their manager and supporters. He kept the same back four, with plenty of options in midfield, and with the hard working Sandor Torghelle causing problems for his former side. Most people inside the Sostoi stadium were counting on the match being a difficult one against Honved, which is exactly as it turned out.
Vidi created several chances in both periods, but found Honved keeper Kemenes in good form. However, he could do nothing in the 92nd minute as Torghelle's header flew past him. In pleasant sunshine but with a strong wind blowing, Torghelle was proving hard to handle for Botis and his fellow Honved defenders. The fourth minute saw a cross from Brachi, being flicked on dangerously, but the ball was hacked clear by the last defender. Brachi was seeing plenty of the ball and his sharp crosses into the box were causing problems.
Honved's backline stood their ground and cleared anything that came their way. Torghelle found the back of the net after 15 minutes, but it was ruled out by referee Janos Takacs. Vidi were dominating things more as the first half went on. Honved did look dangerous on the rare times they countered into Vidi's half. Bozovics in the home goal had very little to do as the players infront of him took the match to the opponents. The teams went in level at the break, and the game carried on where it had ended in the first period. Vinicius also found the back of the net after 48 minutes, but he had handled the ball, and was booked as a result. Left back Szolnoki came off after 5 minutes of the second half, with in form Nikolics replacing him. Paulo Sousa went for a back three, adding further attacking options to his side. Nikolics found himself with a quick chance, but Honved cleared the danger. Sandor and Torghelle both had further chances, but Kemenes was showing real determination to keep his side in the match. Nikolics did force the visiting keeper into an error midway through the second half. He stole in to take the ball away from the keeper, before curling the ball just over the bar.
The chances kept coming, and the introduction of Gyurcso added further pace on the right. Young Kovacs also tasted further first team action, since his winter signing, while Honved kept their concentration focused on their defending. The 4000 supporters inside the stadium were left delighted in time added on. Brachi sent in a lovely ball, which Torghelle latched onto with his head, to guide the ball past the stranded Kemenes to give all three points to Vidi. It proved to be the final bit of action of the game. The three points means that there is now a gap of eight points between third place Vidi and fourth in the table Honved. European football is looking all the more likely as the season carries on.
