Gyorgy Mezey: Satisfied with the performance of the Vidi players

Hungary have a promising future long term

Hungary went down 2-0 in Stockholm, on Friday evening, against Sweden in a European championship qualifying game. Videoton manager Gyorgy Mezey, together with his Debrecen counterpart, Andras Herczeg, both travelled over to watch the game.

"I watch the game through rose tinted glasses, with the reason being that I was proud: Three Videoton players run out in the starting eleven for Hungary. This is always a good feeling for a manager. I am naturally very pleased, that we could provide players for the international side. With regards to the game with Sweden, this was a typical group opening game in the international game. The missing links were evident and you could see the parts of the game that need some oiling. That was the reason that we conceded the goals. I would say at the same time that Sandor Egervari is building a new side, with the long term in mind. He would like to play a well thought out and organized game. Time is needed for further organisation, and the finishing touches to the way the side play. I spent two days out there, and I managed to see how they worked and with what tempo the players produced. What I saw was promising.

With regards to the Videoton players: They did not play any better or worse than the other players in the side. Liptak has become a very stable member of the defence, even if he was beaten to the ball for the first goal. Lazar's performance had everything in it, which his game has at the moment. He chose Intelligent technical solutions, but he also had a few positional errors in  his play. Elek played similarly, and did well in his defensive midfield duties, and got hold of the ball a lot. He could not do what he wanted in the attacking part of the game. I feel that all three can become stable players for the international side. Looking ahead to Tuesday's game with Moldova, the key question will be just how fresh the players can be mentaly, and what levels of concentration they step onto the pitch with. They have to get over the disappointment of this defeat qucikly."
