2018 Autumn milestones

The league title was won back in May 2018. There was plenty for the Vidi faithful to celebrate in the months that followed over the first part of the 2018-19 season: the team performed really well in Europe and produced one of the best performances from a Hungarian side in recent times. Vidi remain in the fight to defend their league title and are still in the Hungarian cup looking forward. The team played 35 games and several nice milestones were achieved since July.

Looking back

The 14 matches played in Europe saw Vidi ease closer towards the 100th match, but so far the number is at the 90 mark, with the game with Chelsea the most recent. That was not the only round number as the home game with PAOK was our 30th win. The match with Dudelange back in July was our 20th draw against a side that would go onto qualify for the EL group stage. The third own goal was also scored in Europe in matches involving Vidi. The first was back in 1985 against Malmö, with the Basel match in 2012 the second. Ethan Ampadu put the ball into his own goal in our game with Chelsea.

The Hungarian cup match against Cigand was won 2-0 as the team progressed to the last 64. That was the 250th match in the competition for the club.

International milestones

Naturally it was not only the team but players also that went onto achieve milestones over the autumn.

Bulgarian international Georgi Milanov was the 10th player to sign that was an international player for a foreign country. He was picked for his countries game with Cyprus by his national team manager. Those 10 international players have played more than 70 matches for their nations with Stopira being the player that hit 70 in Cape Verde's 3-0 win that saw him head a goal.

When you include the Vidi players that have played for Hungary over the years, the number is very high at 400 with Paulo Vinicius being the last player to play for the red, white and green of Hungary.

Vinicius in the top 15

From MOL Vidi FC's current squad, you can find several players that have played for the club over a long period of time.

Paulo Vinicius played 30 times in 2018-19 season and has risen from 17th from 21st place. He has overtaken players such as Tibor Wollek, Laszlo Tiber, Laszlo Kovacs and Laszlo Disztl. He needs to play just 18 more games to break into the top 15 appearances setting players. That could well happen for the central defender over the coming spring season.

Continuing to look at stats and you will find Istvan Kovacs in a higher position having played his 30th game in the Hungarian cup match at Budafok. He is close to breaking into the top 10 of players who have played in the competition overall for the club. The upcoming cup match at Taksony will be another opportunity to move upwards. Kovacs played in the away win over PAOK in the Europa League and that was his 30th game in Europe. He has played 244 matches and the first half of 2018-19 saw him move up from 34th place to 22 with 17 games needed to break into the top 20.

Stopira is not far behind Vinicius and Kovacs. The Cape Verde defender was in 49th place but has improved that and following the autumn is in 39th position. He needs 17 games to make it into the top 30. His 200th game in Vidi colours came in the draw against Chelsea and he is currently level with Roland Szolnoki.

Roland Juhasz will play his 200th game next and is on 199 together with former Vidi player Gyorgy Sandor. If we only look at league games, then the stadium opener against Ujpest was his 150th. He celebrated that with the winning goal as his header secured the win. He moved up from 51st to 41st in the appearance table.

Loic Nego and Mate Patkai are two further players that have played many games for the club. The French defender played in more games over the autumn and has overtaken Patkai. They stand in 59 and 62nd place respectively. Nego has played one more game than Istvan Palkovics and his 100th Vidi league game came in the match with Kisvarda that he scored in. It is also impressive that Patkai also notched his 100th game for the club in the 4-0 away win at Paks.

From the current squad, you could also mention the fact that Adam Kovacsik broke into the top 100 in the club's history. He had been in 108th place but has moved forward to 81. His 100th league game came in the 2-2 draw with FTC.

Marko Scepovic needs 4, while Anel Hadzic has 8 games to play before they can boast making it into the top 100. The latter played his 50th  league game for Vidi in the 1-1 draw with Debrecen in August. Attila Fiola has played the same amount of games when he played in the 2-0 win over Haladas.

A world cup winner played against Vidi for the first time

The Europa League group stage match with Chelsea saw several world stars play for Chelsea FC. Those included Cesc Fabregas and Pedro, who had both played in World Cup winning sides. This had happened once before when Real Madrid player Jorge Valdano played against Vidi in 1985. He helped Argentina to the World Cup success a year later in 1986.

Finally French player Olivier Giroud was the first player in the history of Vidi to be an actual current world cup winner and appear against the red and blues. He did this in the Groupama Arena game that ended in a 2-2 draw. He scored a goal from a free kick. Chelsea also have N'Golo Kante in their squad and he was part of the World cup winning side. However, he did not play in the game with Vidi.
