MTK ended the 2015/16 season in fourth place. With Ujpest not allowed the compete in Europe, that meant that it was enough for Tuesday's opponents to compete in the Europa League during the summer. They met Kazak side Aktobet in Q1. MTK went through 3-1 on aggregate to face Gabala in the next round. However, that proved too tough and the blue and whites went out 4-1 over two matches.

The Budapest club did not start the new season too well. They lost to Vasas, before drawing with league newcomers Gyirmot. Another defeat came against another side that was promoted in the summer in the form of Mezokovesd. Haladas also collected maximum points to see them at the foot of the division. MTK picked up a good point away at Debrecen at the weekend to move off to bottom ahead of Gyirmot.
