The match kicked off in very difficult conditions for a football match to be played in. The hot weather made it hard for both sides to compete, with the temperature over the 30c mark. Paulo Sousa fielded a team with several first team regulars given the chance to rest, ahead of Thursday's important second leg match in Belgium. Ujpest laid down a new pitch over the summer months, and there were no complaints with the quality of the pitch. Vidi fielded several young players, with the likes of Szolnoki, Haraszti, Kovacs and Szekeres getting the chance to impress.

The first 10 minutes saw both sides trying to gain the upperhand. Ujpest, who had a virtually new side from the one that ended last season, moved up a gear as they went looking for the opening goal. Kabat had a good free kick go close, before Remili headed just over the crossbar for the violets. Israeli striker Zarus Yadin then had a good chance with his powerful low shot, but it was well saved by Bozsovics. The players were given the chance to refresh with a water break midway through the first period.

There was action on the half hour, when Mihajlovic brought down Torghelle in the penalty area. Referee Ivanyi pointed at the penalty spot, but captain Sandor saw his shot saved well by Balajcza. The match official began to get more involved in the match, which finally ended with him showing the red card to Paulo Vinicius, following two yellow cards. The referee produced 7 bookings in what was not an ugly game. Ujpest striker Peter Kabat also saw red, after he was booked for the second time for a handball. The first half ended with 20 players on the pitch.

Vidi came out looking a different side in the second half, putting the home side under pressure. Toth had a good shot end up taking a deflection, before Szolnoki lined up to hit a shot towards the top left hand corner from 20 meters out. However Balajcza was once again in the right place at the right time to save Ujpest. Remili then found himself with a good chance after 57 minutes, but his shot from 17 meters flew over the bar. The game's turning point came after 63 minutes, when Paulo Sousa sent on Mitrovics and Nikolics to freshen things up. It was Nikolics who raced down the right before he sent in a great pass, which Torghelle dived at to head powerfully at goal. The Ujpest keeper failed to keep the ball out of the net and Vidi took a 1-0 lead.

Nemanja Nikolics could have settled the game after 72 minutes. He received a great ball from Mitrovics, before rolling the ball past Balajcza, only to see his effort come back off the post. The crowd inside the Szusza stadium then erupted in celebration as Krisztian Berki collected a gold medal in the London Olympics. Referee Ivanyi then sent off the third player, with Szolnoki given his marching orders, forcing Vidi to see out the match with just 9 men. Ujpest put the visitors under pressure in the final moments of the match, but the red and blues battled with heart and soul till the final whistle. Torghelle's goal was enough to give Vidi all three points at a very warm Ujpest stadium.
