Roland Szolnoki: I consider the season behind us to be a failure

A lengthy interview with the young defender, who not only looks back, but also ahead to next season.

2013-14 season
"We did not start the current season the way we had planned to. We then suffered a big failure when we were beaten by Podgorica in the Europa League, at the first qualification stage. We then managed to get back up on our feet. We started the new league season well, and I can also describe it as a dream start. We then suffered a lack of form towards the end of the autumn season, and we failed to find out the reasons for this. That resulted in us becoming more tense, and this was not just in the results, but could be seen in the way we played. This period was memorable for us hitting the post or crossbar, and the ball always rebounded away from our players. The club then did everything to make sure that we could go on a pre-season in fantastic surroundings. We played against particularly strong opponents during our Spanish training camps. They were also very good friendly games. Then spring came - and for me I do not know why, but we remained tense and could not play well, and we could do nothing to change this. I am really disappointed overall, as it was not just in the cups, but also in the league where we could not create a lasting value. We are the best club in Hungary, but we can not be proud of our performances this season. It will feel strange to begin pre-season without European competition, but prepare for the new league season instead."

Summer break and the World Cup
"I will spend a few days at home following the end of the season, and will just try and rest. We will then travel to Croatia with my girlfriend and a couple of others during the week. It is important that I manage to completely charge myself up during this period. The pre-season will then begin towards the second half of June. I am sure that hard work lies ahead of us. I will also be following the World Cup in Brazil, and I am a great fan of this competition. I feel that the hosts will be the favourites, but I will be hoping that the Spanish can come out on top, as they are my favourites."

The new 2014-15 season
"I have read in many places in recent days that my contract comes to an end in the summer, and that I will be released on a free transfer. I can say clearly now that I still have a year and a half of my contract remaining with Vidi, and as I have been at the club as a player since a kid, I have very strong ties to this football club. I am happy to commit myself to a longer term deal. We have clear targets for the new season ahead. We have to fight on all fronts to come out on top, and we cannot repeat what has happened this season. It will not be easy, as everyone can see that the Hungarian teams will be even stronger. We will also need to have a stronger squad and develop further, so that we remain a key side in the Hungarian league."
