We look back at a very good autumn season for everyone connected with Videoton FC
2012 June
The team began their pre-season training at the end of June, ahead of the 2012-2013 season. Vidi played three friendlies during the month. They included two comfortable wins against NK Tisina 6-0, and a 2-1 victory over NK Mura. There was also a 1-1 draw with Ukrainian side Arsenal Kiev. The players put in very hard work as the results confirmed.
2012 July
Vidi played out a 2-2 draw with Partizan Belgrade, as they began to focus on the Super cup final, which was to be played at the Sostoi stadium. Debrecen provided the opposition, having won the championship. More than 5,000 turned out to watch the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw after full time. Debrecen took the lead after 2 minutes through Adam Bodi, but Istvan Kovacs hit back in the 72nd minute. The game went straight to a penalty shootout with Videoton keeping their cool to win. Marco Caneira hit the all important spot kick to clinch the first silverware of the new season. This match was also the final one before the start of the Europa league campaign, with Videoton being drawn out of the hat with Slovakian side, Slovan Bratislava. A crowd of around 6,000 were in attendance in the Slovakian capital, as Videoton fought out a 1-1 draw, with Oliveira scoring the all important away goal after 29 minutes. Vidi were in confident mood for the second leg as a result.
The 26th July was the date of the second leg at the Sostoi stadium. Over 8,000 came out to watch this evenly balanced match. The supporters decorated the stadium in red, white and green just before the start of the game. The fantastic atmosphere helped Vidi in the match, with the home side not letting Slovan to open up. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, which meant that it was Videoton who progressed through to the next round.
Vidi began their league campaign just three days after the Europa league success. The OTP league began with a home match against Papa. Szucs in the visitors goal, produced a very good display, as his side picked up a point in the 1-1 draw.
2012 August
The draw for the next round of the Europa league meant a two-legged affair with Belgium side Gent. The third round qualification game began at the Sostoi stadium in front of 6,200. A very well organized Vidi defence made it hard for Gent to find any gaps, with the good performance being rewarded by a 1-0 win, thanks to a Nikolics strike. That gave Vidi a precious lead to go into the return match. Videoton travelled out to Belgium a week later, knowing that a draw would be enough to progress to the play off stage. However, Paulo Sousa's side had other things in mind, with a brilliant performance away from home.
Gent were shell shocked as they missed every chance that came their way in the opening 15 minutes. They were then even more amazed to see Oliveira score the opener for Vidi, giving them a 2-0 lead and an away goal. A Nikolics double in the second half gave Videoton a 4-0 win on aggregate, and sent the 200 travelling supporters home very happy. It also meant that Vidi would feature in the draw for the Europa league play-off's, and they were just two matches away from the all important group stage.
The draw did not prove too kind to the red and blues of Fehervar. They were pulled out against Turkish giants Trabzonspor, with the first game taking place in Turkey. The value of the Trabzon squad was more than the whole of the Hungarian first division! So everyone knew that this would be a very difficult challenge to overcome. The Trabzon supporters were very friendly and made sure that Videoton would get a warm welcome. The match ended up being a 0-0 draw, which gave the Hungarian side hope for the second leg. A fantastic 25,000 attendance also gave Videoton a feel of a real European night away from home.
The 30th August was to prove a memorable day for Videoton. It was also the 42nd birthday of manager Paulo Sousa, and his side would go on to give him the perfect birthday present. A good match ended without either side scoring, which meant that the game went into extra time. That also failed to provide any goals, so the tie was settled on a penalty shootout in front of the loyal Vidi supporters. Trabzon's Soner and then Zokora missed their penalty kick's, so it was left to the final kick of Mitrovics to clinch the all important group stage. He did not disappoint as his kick found the bottom right hand corner, which sent the whole stadium in to total delight. Videoton had qualified for the Europa league group stages, capping a fantastic evening at the Sostoi stadium at the same time!
The draw for the group stages took place in Monte Carlo the following day. Vidi were drawn in Group G, together with Sporting Lisbon, Genk and Basel. Videoton also played four league matches during the month, with an away win at Ujpest, followed by wins over Eger and Haladas. Honved did manage to win at the Sostoi stadium, to the frustration of the home crowd.
