We take a closer look at the players Vidi used to go top of the table
Manager Gyorgy Mezey relied on a fairly consistent group of players, which was one of the reasons for a successful autumn campaign. Mladen Bozsovic in the Vidi goal made the position his own, although he had to fight for that place with Tomas Tujval at the start of the season. Bozsovic went on to look sound and confident in goal, which was a great help to the defence in front of him. Gyorgy Mezey opted for young Pal Lazar at the right back spot. His form over the course of the first half of the year, won over international manager Sandor Egervari, as Lazar not only became a regular starter for Vidi, but for Hungary as well. Marko Andics had occupied that position last year, and he found himself playing mostly at left back, competing mainly with summer signing Sandor Hidvegi.
The departure of captain Gabor Horvath to Dutch side Breda, failed to disrupt things at the back as Tamas Vasko stepped in to form a good partnership with Zoltan Liptak. The latter had a great year, and just like Pal Lazar, has become a regular in the national side. The defence have remained consistent, which is vital for any side wishing to be successful. Mezey had plenty of choice for the midfield positions, with Daniel Nagy being first choice on the right wing when he was fit and not injured. Summer signing Andras Gosztonyi came in when needed and showed that he can be counted on in the future. The left wing often saw Attila Polonkai begin the game, while yet another summer signing, Dusan Vasziljevic also going on to establish himself in the side as the season went on. The central midfield places mainly saw three players battling it out. The find of the season was unquestionably Akos Elek, whose performances in the centre of midfield earned him a starting position in the Hungarian national side. Club captain Balazs Farkas and Gyorgy Sandor were also regulars in the side. There was limited chances for summer captures Bojan Djordjic and Martin Mutumba, with the latter struggling to adjust to life in Hungary.
Andre Alves remained first choice striker, and his goals and form over the autumn season played a large part in Vidi ending it with a seven points lead. The question was who was the ideal partner for him up front. Nemanja Nikolics was often the preferred choice, while a fit Goran Vujovics also showed what he was capable of when he played. Lazlo Lencse had a disappointing first half of the season, as he struggled to get in to the starting eleven. However, a strong spine to the side has emerged, from keeper Bozsovics, to the two towering centre backs of Vasko and Liptak, with Elek in front of them, and the ever dangerous Brazilian, Andre Alves regularly finding the back of the opponents net.
