We continue our series with a look at seasons gone by. The team finished the 2004-05 season in 8th place in the league table.

The season started with difficulty when at the end of July, Videoton Holding Rt announced that they would no longer back the team, and would step aside from the start of September. They also revealed that they would not allow the name to be used for the team. That meant that the club continued under the name of FC Fehervar. July saw the appointment of new Managing Director Laszlo Gal and he decided that he would replace Janos Csank with Aurel Csertoi as new team manager.
A completely new team
The summer of 2004 resulted in many players arriving. There were also homegrown players included with the likes of Zsolt Feher. Striker Alexander Alumona arrived from Vac, Midfielder Mario Mozsics also joined from Serb team Milicionar Belgrade. Henrik Kovacs was another new face from Soroksar. Attila Kuttor was signed from Siofok and midfielder Tamas Gyorok and forward Csaba Csordas came in from Kecskemet. Defender Csaba Csizmadia also signed for the club. Midfielder Attila Kriston joined from Ferencvaros, while keeper Zsolt Szebok made the short move from Győr. Defender Zoltan Vincze was yet another new player after he signed from Bekescsaba. Midfielder Tibor Halgas continued his career with the club and forward Ferenc Horvath also came back to the football club.
Norbert Bartyik headed out to FC Szeged with Ferenc Koczian moving south to Pecs. Daniel Kontos joined Felcsut and Lombard signed Thomas Medved from Fehervar. National Bucharest also took Marian Savu.
Plenty of goals in pre-season is followed by a difficult start
The first friendly of the summer was at home to Tatabanya. Fehervar won that game 3-0 and then beat Mezofalva 8-1, Veszprem 7-0 and Felcsut 2-1. Mor were also beaten 5-1.
The first game of the new league season was a home fixture with Ujpest FC. Close to 4000 supporters saw the home side lose 2-1. Paks were next and a 2-2 draw, while there was a 1-0 defeat to Ferencvaros and a 3-0 loss to Debrecen.
The first win came in week 5, which was followed by a good run of results. Fehervar would remain unbeaten for the next nine matches: Pecs 1-0, Honved 4-1, Diosgyőr 3-0, Bekescsaba 5-0, Nyiregyhaza 2-0 and a 1-0 win over Vasas. There were also three matches drawn against Győr, MTK and Kaposvar respectively.
The final game of the autumn season was a 2-1 defeat against Sopron, which put a different picture on things. It was a good autumn but the financial stability of the club continued to experience problems.
October saw even more difficulties and there was outstanding debts of over two months. That saw the intervention of the Hungarian FA and Zsolt Dveri was given a free transfer after breaking the contract with the club. Good news for the supporters was that it was announced in October that Ferenc Horvath would be signing for Videoton. The new main stand was also handed over in the middle of November.
Transfer ban - key players leave
The league handed out a ban to FC Fehervar, which did not allow them to make any signings until they met their debts. There were further six players that broke their contracts and left the club. The financial problems at the club also meant that key players were not kept on. That resulted in a further 8 heading out of the door. Midfielder Csaba Csordas headed to Sopron, Tibor Halgas went to Diosgyőr, Tamas Szalai to Felcsut, Balazs Toth moved to Turkish club Malatyaspor. Tibor Szabo signed for Papa. Another player to move to Papa was Zoltan Hercegfalvi. Scottish club Livingstone signed Ferenc Horvath and Attila Kriston.
Another undefeated pre-season
A depleted squad started pre-season in the first few days of January. Akos Koller was another missing player besides those that had left the club over the winter. The defender was in hospital receiving treatment to his lungs. There were the usual friendly matches arranged on top of the training sessions as the players prepared for the second half of the season.
Points deducted at the start of the spring season
The league disciplinary board deducted 3 points due to the case involving Gajic Predrag. The first match of the spring resulted in a 3-0 loss to Ujpest. A good battling performance away to Papa saw a 2-1 win. There was a surprising 1-0 away win against Ferencvaros at the Ulloi ut stadium in Budapest. Debrecen and Fehervar played out a 2-2 draw.
The teams performances then suffered a dip in form with a 1-0 loss at home to Honved. However, there was a good 2-1 win over Győr that followed. before a 3-1 defeat away at Diosgyőr. Fehervar and Bekescsaba played out a 0-0 draw. MTK emerged with the points following their 3-2 win at the Sostoi.
The best performance of the spring came against Nyiregyhaza. A high scoring match produced 8 goals and a 5-3 win. The final two games of the season were drawn against Sopron and Vasas. That meant a total of 40 points and an 8th place finish. The season produced 11 wins, 10 draws and 9 defeats.
Fourth round exit in the Hungarian cup
The club entered the cup at the round 2 stage. The match against Soroksar in September saw a 6-0 win to make it through to the next round. Round 3 was a match with Szolnoki MAV and another good 3-1 win. That meant a place in the last 16 of the competition. The end of 2004 produced a game with Bekescsaba. Yet another good 3-0 win secured a place in the next round.
Honved came out on top in the penalty shootout after the two sides had drawn the game after 90 minutes. That meant a cup exit for the men from Szekesfehervar.
