Season in review: 2003-2004

The continuing financial problems at the club make things difficult. The team finish the league season in 8th place.

Manager Bertalan Bicskei took pre-season, but on a temporary basis as his contract came to an end on the 30th June. His place on the bench was taken by Janos Csank, who was assisted by coaches Laszlo Vass and Sandor Csato.

Many players leave

Goalkeeper Geza Turi arrives from ZTE. Midfielder Zoltan Schwarcz makes the move from Siofok, while defender Akos Koller and Alexandar Pantic also arrive. Romanian striker Marian Savu joins from Cypriot side AEK Limassol. Midfielder Ion Voicu continues his career at the club, while forward Zoltan Hercegfalvi and Artmedia forward Tomas Medved are further additions. More arrivals in the form of Dinamo Bucharest keeper Daniel Tudor, Szekszard defender Attila Feher and Csepel midfielder Norbert Bartyik also join. Youth team player Daniel Nagy moves up to the first team squad.

The club breaks up contracts with defender Alekszander Sztanojevic. Forwards Ljubomir Palejkoval and Attila Korsos also depart as does defender Zoltan Vasas. Keeper Arpad Milinte goes to Sopron, with midfielder Norbert Nemedi joining REAC. Midfielder Norbert Toth moves to Greece and Panioniosz. Other players to be allowed to leave by manager Janos Csank were midfielder Monye Onyeabor and forward Krisztian Timar.

The loan deal involving keeper Zoltan Vegy came to an end as did Lajos Terjek. Forward Ferenc Roth did not accept the clubs offer on the tbale and he finally moved to Ujpest to continue his career. Defender Balazs Kovacs and midfielder Tibor Pomper moved to REAC. Defender Dejan Vilotics moved east to Bekescsaba. Midfielder Sandor Csato retired from the game as the squad took shape for the season ahead.

Intertoto cup and start of league season – hopeful start results in a plunge in the table

The club entered the intertoto cup a few weeks into pre-season. They were drawn against Bulgarian side Marek Dupnica. The Sostoi stadium was undergoing redevelopment so the game was switched to Dunaujvaros. That game saw Videoton take an early lead, which was further extended by a good goal from Gabor Foldes. The game could have been settled in the first half with further chances. The Bulgarian side managed to level the score within 3 minutes and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The return leg in Dupnica saw the home side make the better start. A Gabor Foldes double brought the scores level at 2-2, but the game was not settled over the 90 minutes. It was the Bulgarian side that scored the all important goal to win 3-2 and Videoton exited the cup. The season started with difficulty. The team did not express themselves against Pecs, but they should still have won the game despite that. The matched finished with both sides picking up a point in the 1-1 draw.

The second league match was played behind closed doors against Ferencvaros. Referee Attila Dubraviczky made several decisions to determine the outcome of the match. Vidi led 2-1 after 70 minutes when Zsolt Dveri was sent off for protesting. The 10 men could not see out the game and it finished 2-2. Vidi won the first game of the season against Győri ETO with goals from Schwarz and Toth in the 2-0 win.

The team were pleased to move into the new modern dressing rooms within the main stand for the home game against Balaton FC. They had used containers as work continued on the new stand. The game did not go well but all three goals in the 2-1 win came from the penalty spot.

Week 8 of the season could have seen Vidi move to the top of the league if they could beat MTK. It was the Budapest side that took the lead before a Medved goal levelled the game at 1-1. The good run continued against Ujpest, who were full up with international players, but they ended up going down 2-1 to Vidi. A 2-0 over Sopron in week 10 saw 3 more points, which meant second place in the table. There was just one point between Vidi and leaders MTK at the top. Daniel Nagy at the age of 19 made his debut for the first team.

There was plenty of interest with around 10,000 inside the Sostoi stadium for the big Vidi - Ferencvaros match. The big battle was played at a good tempo with the visitors scoring an 89th minute winner.

The close of the autumn season did not go too well as the team lost 2-0 away at Haladas. There was also a 1-0 defeat against Siofok to finish the first half of the season in 7th place.

Financial problems results in the club not dealing in the transfer market - points come slowly

The management of the club blamed a lack of funds for the reason of little movement in the winter transfer market. The club were again punished due to the case involving Zoltan Vasas and were not allowed to sign players. There were no arrivals to the squad with Norbert Lattenstien returning from his loan move and forward Gabor Foldes moving on loan to Felcsut.

The first game of the spring season was away against Debrecen. The home side, who had just exited the UEFA cup scored before half time. Vidi had Ferenc Koczian sent off for protesting with the home side scoring a further goal. The team went down 2-0 in the game.

Week 4 of the spring season failed to end in a win and points for Videoton. A bad performance against Ujpest finished in a 2-0 defeat. There was worse to come as the side crumbled against Sopron and lost 5-0. Foreign players Ivan Risztics, Marian Savu, Gabriel Vochin and Tomas Medved all left the club due to money problems that continued to haunt the Fehervar club.

Managing Director Endre Maraczy resigned as the situation worsened. He offered to remain until the end of that season if required. Sponsors did not pay and the club and local council all offered help with 40 million loss being run up by the club. Sports Director Istvan Szigli also resigned and former player Zoltan Csucsanszky took over in the first weeks of April. Andras Grof became club director.

Things slowly pick up at the end

Vidi qualified for the bottom part of the league, which was split into a top and bottom part. They travelled to Győr and deservedly won 4-0. Another win at Haladas followed and a 2-0 scoreline. That saw them just two points behind bottom half leaders Pecs.

Goals seemed to come more easily towards the end of the season with Győr being beaten 4-1 and a Tibor Szabo double helping Vidi to a 5-0 win. The team thanked the home supporters in the final home game with a whopping 6-1 win over Haladas. That saw them leap to the top of the bottom half of the table. A 2-0 defeat to Bekescsaba meant that they would not end up top of the bottom league. A total of 40 points were collected and an 8th place finish as 10 games were won, 10 were drawn and the remaining 12 lost.

Hungarian cup battle – place in the final 8

The Hungarian cup action included a game with Penzugyőr who were beaten 4-0, with goals from Hercegfalvi, Medved, Savu and Koczian. A place in the last 16 paired Vidi with Oroshaza FC. That ended in a good 4-0 win. The next round was a game with Integral DAC. A total of 6 goals were scored as Vidi ran out 4-2 winners. Videoton were drawn against ZTE in the last 8 but they would eventually go out at that stage after ZTE won 1-0.
