Joan Carrillo: I am thinking about an attacking side for the season ahead

We have prepared a lengthy interview with the head coach. Joan Carrillo talks about several issues like when the squad will be complete, what he expects from the season ahead and how it feels to be head coach. He also has a message for the supporters.

We are now beyond the first week of pre-season. How would you sum up the work until now and how do you feel as the head coach of Videoton?

I am very happy. I wake up each morning with joy as I jump in to that day's work. I go to sleep in the evening hardly waiting for the next day to start. The lads have been training really hard, and I have not got a bad word as they have given their all. This is a completely new situation for us, but I am really enjoying the work and feel that the same applies with the players.

The returning loan players are also preparing with the team. We are thinking here about Fejes, Zsóter and Szekeres. Also training with Vidi is Zsolt Nagy. What is your opinion on these youngsters, and it is possible that they will be playing football for Vidi in the new season?

I spoke to each of the players before the start of pre-season. I really want to see in those players, who still have a contract with Vidi that we can count on them in the first team. I am searching for the best players, and they can now prove that they are the ones. I am sure that by the end of the training camp in Austria, all our answers concerning them will have been answered. A decision will then be made following that, which will be the best for the club.

You have earlier assisted Paulo Sousa at Videoton and then José Gomes. Which Videoton will your side be more similar to?

I have a determined anticipation of football. I have worked with several coaches besides the two mentioned. I have also learned from each of them. Vidi is a team that has to go out on to the pitch in order to have 3 points more by the end of the match. I am really thinking about an attacking side, which closes down well and also has an organized defence.

Does this mean that the basic formation of the team will remain 4-2-3-1, or the often seen 4-4-2 during the spring season?

That is the aim that the team should not only be about a tactical formation to gain results. We will always work our tactics based on the forthcoming opponent, and it is quite possible that we will also switch formations during games, depending on the result. One thing certain is that in order to achieve our aims in each game, which is to leave the pitch as winners, we will need to attack and force things. My philosophy is that when we hit attacks, then the players should play with as little provision as possible, or you could say that I will give them a free hand when we are on the attack. At the same time, once we lose the ball, all of the players have to play their part in organizing things in defence, and we need to get possession back as quickly as possible.

The squad is not yet complete if we guess well. Can we know how many players you would like to sign, and which positions your looking to bring players in for?

Naturally everyone can see the positions that we are not yet complete in. I have been discussing these issues with the director of the club, and he is working on bringing in quality players to Vidi. I make recommendations for the players I would gladly see in our squad - as I have already done - but it is the decision of the club director, to evaluate whether the player is worth signing or not. I feel that this system works well and we all have our own roles. It is very important that we work together to achieve the targets. There is also a huge significance to communicate with each other.

During the season, if there are injuries or players that are banned, is there a chance that you will pump up the numbers of the squad by moving players from the Videoton II side. Just how close will the cooperation be with the second team?

As much as possible. I would really like to keep my eyes on the performances of the young players in the Vidi II side. The future players could come from this team. Earlier when I was working at Espanyol, the main philosophy of the club was to bring through their own players and build them in to the team. I have a similar idea for this. I have spoken to many of the young player recently, and I told them all that the door to the first team dressing room is open. They do not have to knock on it, but just step over the threshold. How is this possible? The answer is that they will need to give regular good performances in the second team, both in training and in matches. I am sure that with me regularly keeping an eye on them, if there are players doing the above, then they will get the chance to prove themselves, whether it is in the league cup, the Hungarian cup or in given chances in league matches.

How do you see the season ahead of us?

The players, just like me, are very motivated. We all know that the league season ahead will be very long, and many things can happen in between. We are all working together in the coaching team to achieve the best possible results. I have been working for three years in Hungary. I feel that Hungarian football has continuously developed during that time. The top sides have continuously strengthened. Those teams are pulling each other forward, which is good for Hungarian football. I have seen many bad quality pitches over the last three years in the top division. The situation now is that Debrecen have a new stadium, with the same applying to both FTC and the Puskas Academy. Further stadiums will shortly also be reconstructed.

Finally, what is your message to the Videoton supporters, just a few weeks before the start of the new league season?

I can honestly say that I really like the Vidi supporters. Not only at home do they back the team for 90 minutes, but also during away matches. The most important thing that I can say to the supporters is that Videoton FC will always battle hard throughout the 90 minutes for the win. We can get over barriers easier with the support behind us. This is why I would ask all those that believe in Vidi, and who believe the importance of maintaining success for the team, to come out for the season opener at the Sostoi stadium against Lombard Papa. Get behind us and give us your backing. We will win together and celebrate together.
