José Gomes full interview in the Nemzeti Sport

The Videoton manager talks about Hungarian football, the Hungarian language and many things connected with Vidi.

The following interview took place in the Nemzeti Sport on the 26th February 2014.

Can we talk in Hungarian?

Do we have to? – as José Gomes holds his hands apart, just before Tuesday morning's training session. "We can talk in Portuguese, English, Spanish, a little bit in Greek, but Hungarian..... it would not be enough for an interview, which is the language that you speak in.

Is it important to understand the language of the country where you work in?

Sometimes there are situations, where I can feel that it would be better not to understand what the events are about.

What are you thinking of exactly?

The fate of a football manager is similar to a politician in the sense that many criticize them, and you can always hear in every direction, what should happen differently, and that naturally it should be done much better. When I worked in Greece, I realised then that it is not a problem that I cannot read the newspapers there. There were 14 sports journals, and also a sports radio, which broadcast 24 hours a day, with coaches, players, club owners, and even dealt with the kitmen. I think that this takes the focus away from the work, so I did not mind that I could not understand what they were writing about or what people from outside were talking about.

Is there anything that you have really started to like here?

I like the taste of fruit and vegetables. I knew that the Hungarian kitchen is world famous, and I have not been disappointed. We have a similar dish in Portugal to Goulash, but I tasted it here first.

What do you say about our football if you are asked?

I would say that the people here passionately like the game, and that there are talented youngsters, and everything is in place for them to be successful.

What is wrong? What do you see as the biggest problems in Hungarian football?

The direction has not been determined. I like the Spanish tiki-taka, and also enjoy Brazilian football. Many like the aggressiveness of the English style, but somehow there does not seem to be a direction, which Hungarian football can follow. Perhaps the direction has not been pointed out with football coaching, but you have to fully go along the way that was first outlined. If there are several changes in direction, then this is not the best situation.

How would you sum up the work put in over recent weeks? You make a much more smoother impression now than you did back in December.

Yes, there were errors that appeared in our game back then, which I think we are now over. This is exactly why we spent the first training camp giving the players plenty of work, so that we could see how they would react in a tired condition, and the errors that they would produce in team games. We then repaired these mistakes during the second training camp, and tried to give those tired muscles time to relax.

Who do you share your thoughts with, who is the person you speak to first regarding events that happen in Vidi matches?

My family and I do not have to go too far to find my strongest critic: my son, Zé Afonso does not leave me alone if we do not win. He is 14 years old and plays in Vasas.....

In Vasas?!

Yes. My family lives in Budapest, and this is close to where we are. Geography is not the most important, but the Kubala Academy is a good school, and they learn discipline there, and it is a well organised youth system, with very good technical and tactical qualified coaches, and they are all well prepared, just like at our club.

What happens if you feel that your son does not receive the correct professional advice in football? You point them out there or discuss these things at home?

I would never do that! I am just one of many parents at the Vasas Academy, and not a manager when I am there. It would not be correct of me to interfere, and I have no reason to. My job as a father is to teach and prepare my children for the things that they will need in life.
