Tomas Tujvel always wanted to be a goalkeeper

Tomas Tujvel has become a regular starter in the side

Even though Tomas Tujvel was born and brought up in Nyitra, he doesn't have any Hungarian roots. However he does have roots in football. His grandfather played for both first and second division sides in Slovakia, as well as with Nyitra, and then became a referee. His father also played for smaller sides. "I began playing football at the age of six, in my home town of Nyitra. I always wanted to be a goalkeeper, despite the fact that they played me a centre back for a while. It was only at the age of 10 that I finally went in goal. I was a determined child, never wanting to try out any other sport, or any other position. I feel best when I am standing in between the two posts."

That determination was not enough alone for him to realise his dreams, and play abroad. Young Tomas showed at the age of 15 how clever he could be. He won the best goalkeeper award at that age. He played his way through the various youth age groups. "Each keeper has his strengths as well as his weaknesess. I think that you can quickly see what someone is good at when you first look at them. I cannot say that much about me, but they said that my movements were similar to that of a cat." laughed Tomas.

Tomas moved to Videoton in the summer of 2009, and spent the 2009/2010 season mainly sitting on the substitutes bench. He did play in a few of the league cup games last season. He has broken in to the first team as a starting figure this year. "I do not regret signing for Videoton. I was clear with the fact that it takes a new player some time before he can get himself into the team, especially when your talking about a goalkeeper. I waited for my chance with patience, and now that I have it, I want to make the most of the opportunity. With regards to the Hungarian championship, I do not feel that it is weaker than the Slovakian league. Perhaps it has become a bit tougher lately, but I cannot see such a big difference between the two. But people can make up their own minds, and I feel good here in Fehervar. The Hungarian league gives me a chance to develop, and perhaps a stepping stone. My heart is set on playing in the German, or even the Dutch first division, but first I have to prove myself here." continued Tomas.

He has a wife, who is a beautician, and they have a two year old daughter named Vanessa, and they all live in Fehervar. The distance is not that big between Fehervar and Nyitra, roughly around 160km, which means that the family travel home when they have a day off. "I understand a lot in Hungarian, but cannot speak that much. I understand the main words when we are in the dressing room. However, English is a main language between some of the players, and that helps us to communicate."
