Gyereksarok9171964-től, 15 éves korától futballozott Fehérváron, így saját nevelésűnek tekinthető Kovács József, "a magyar Beckenbauer", akkori csapatkapitányunk, Bognár Ferenc unokaöccse. A fantasztikus bekk (akire karrierje elején még inkább középpályásként számítottak edzői) 1968-ban már 6 alkalommal játszott az NB I-ben, de igazán a visszajutás után robbant be: 1980-ig nem akadt szezonja, amikor ne játszott volna legalább 25-ször.
Tagja volt bajnoki ezüstérmes csapatunknak 1975-76-ban (az ominózus, üllői úti mérkőzésen érvényes gólt lőtt, amit Müncz játékvezető nem adott meg), játszott az 1974-75-ös és 1976-77-es UEFA Kupa-szereplés alkalmával is, csapatkapitány volt. Pályafutása azonban nem ért véget 316 vidis NB I-es bajnokival, hiszen miután 1980-ban nem engedték el az osztrák Wiener SC-hez, Budapestre igazolt, bár később ezt a döntését több nyilatkozatban is elismerve megbánta.
Újpesten ugyan kétszeres kupagyőztes lett (egyik sikerét épp a Vidi ellen aratta), de bajnok nem és igazán csak kiegészítőemberként tekintettek rá, így hiába lépett pályára a válogatottban 1971 és 1979 között 18-szor, az igazolás után már nem került vissza oda. 1964-től, 15 éves korától futballozott Fehérváron, így saját nevelésűnek tekinthető Kovács József, "a magyar Beckenbauer", akkori csapatkapitányunk, Bognár Ferenc unokaöccse. A fantasztikus bekk (akire karrierje elején még inkább középpályásként számítottak edzői) 1968-ban már 6 alkalommal játszott az NB I-ben, de igazán a visszajutás után robbant be: 1980-ig nem akadt szezonja, amikor ne játszott volna legalább 25-ször.
Tagja volt bajnoki ezüstérmes csapatunknak 1975-76-ban (az ominózus, üllői úti mérkőzésen érvényes gólt lőtt, amit Müncz játékvezető nem adott meg), játszott az 1974-75-ös és 1976-77-es UEFA Kupa-szereplés alkalmával is, csapatkapitány volt. Pályafutása azonban nem ért véget 316 vidis NB I-es bajnokival, hiszen miután 1980-ban nem engedték el az osztrák Wiener SC-hez, Budapestre igazolt, bár később ezt a döntését több nyilatkozatban is elismerve megbánta.
Újpesten ugyan kétszeres kupagyőztes lett (egyik sikerét épp a Vidi ellen aratta), de bajnok nem és igazán csak kiegészítőemberként tekintettek rá, így hiába lépett pályára a válogatottban 1971 és 1979 között 18-szor, az igazolás után már nem került vissza oda. A gépésztechnikus végzettségű védő az 1972-es müncheni olimpián ezüstérmet szerzett, 1973-ban a legnépszerűbb labdarúgónak választották - a dobogón még Bene és Páncsics szerepelt...
