Athletes from the Hungarian Special Olympics Association visited our team at the Sóstó

The young people with Down's syndrome took part in a stadium tour and then played football with our first team players.

It has become a tradition for our club to host young people with Down syndrome on the World Down Syndrome Day on the 21st March in Sóstó, in cooperation with the Hungarian Special Olympics Association. On Tuesday morning, the programme started with a stadium tour at the MOL Arena Sóstó, where our visitors could try out the benches, visit the guest changing rooms and the press conference room, and then headed for the training pitches. Here, they watched the second half of our first team's training session, and soon afterwards joined our players on the pitch.

Our head coach, Bartosz Grzelak, divided our players and the young people with Down's syndrome into teams, followed by a makeshift game of penalty kicks, passing and chats. The programme was rounded off with a team photo session.

There is a reason why Down Syndrome International (DSI) chose 21st March as World Down Syndrome Day. The day marks chromosome 21, and the third month of the year marks the triplication of this chromosome, the abnormality that leads to Down's syndrome. This is why World Down Syndrome Day is the 21st day of the third month of the year. The original idea came from the geneticist Stylianos E. Antonarakis, and was taken up by the Swiss patient group ART21, which was set up to raise awareness. The first World Day was held in Switzerland in 2006.
