Vinicius: "No one was prepared for this, everyone is trying to process what is happening differently"

We talked to our national team defender about how everyday life is going for him now and about his friends and family in Brazil.

- How do you go about your everyday life during the forced league break. How much have you and your family managed to adapt to this new situation?

Indeed, this is a whole new life situation for all people right now. I don’t think anyone was prepared for this, everyone is trying to process what is happening differently. The life of an athlete is determined by movement, and the game If we are talking about team sports, then there is also the whole team. Obviously, movement on some level has remained a part of our lives as we get program's on a daily basis, but it’s not at all the same as when the team trains together. Not to even mention just how much we are missing playing in matches. At the same time I have always been the type of person that tries to find the positives in things and I have managed to do that now. I have never got to spend as much time with my wife and kids as I have now. We go for walks together each day and carry out the tasks together after that with regards to the kids and their schoolwork. We spend the evening watching TV together. Naturally the kids cannot really take in what is going on and why their lives have changed so much. They are enjoying it and spending so much time together. Obviously they are also missing their friends.

- What is the situation back in Brazil for your friends and family that live there?

Sadly the situation back home in Brazil is bad. I do not want to go into politics but those that read the news will know that the country is not being led by an average leader. They did not really take the Coronavirus seriously in the beginning. Decisions were no taken in time as was the case in countries here in Europe. There are a lot of places in Brazil where the news doesn’t even reach the majority of people. Just think of the terrible, unpredictable consequences of this virus spreading in one of the favelas. So the situation is not very encouraging yet, but I am in daily contact with my mum and sister as well as many of my friends and luckily everyone is safe. My sibling works as a secretary in a hospital, so he has an insight into the situation, but luckily he has no direct contact with the patients. I am confident that, in the end, Brazil will also survive this serious epidemic with as few victims as possible.

- The forced break has been going on for a month and a half, do you see a realistic chance that we can end this season yet?

It all depends on when we can start training together again. I think that if all teams were allowed to train again in the first or second week of May at the latest, it would be possible to hold league matches again in early June. But these are just speculations on my part, we are all very much looking forward to the final decision of the authorities. I think everyone wants us to be able to finish the season, but only if no one’s health is endangered by it.
