Marko Scepovic: Top goalscorer for the third time

We sat down with the forward for a lengthy interview following the end of the 2018/19 season.

Marko Scepovic arrived almost three years ago in the summer of 2016 to Szekesfehervar. He scored a hatrick against PMFC in a cup game almost straight away. Those goals were to be followed by a further 44, which means that the forward who celebrates his 28th birthday in May, is the top goalscorer in his third season with us.

What does it mean to you to be top goalscorer in each of the seasons you have been with us?
Speaking briefly, I came here as a forward and that is my job to help the team with goals. I am pleased that the seasons have ended up this way. I am especially pleased that my goals have contributed to the club being successful.

Is it true that in the beginning you did not imagine staying at Vidi for 3 years, but Danko Lazovic later convinced you that this is your place?
Partly yes. There was never the option that I would turn down the club but I just asked for time to make sure I made the best decision then. It is not a secret that I spoke to Danko about the club and the country. He was already a Vidi player at the time and his positive thoughts counted for a lot in making the decision. I have not been disappointed in what he said.

What was the problem in Greece? You arrived as a Serbian international, but did not really get the chance as you were loaned out several times. Perhaps as a Partizan player, the supporters of PAOK would have accepted you better?
It is true that the relationship between PAOK and Partizan is stronger than with Olympiacos, who are friendlier with Zvezda. I did not have any problems with the supporters though. It was a simple decision by the manager to play me less. I can say it very simplistically, you have to accept the decision of a manager at a football club as it is a workplace just like anywhere else. Naturally I wanted to play more so I started to look for options after a while when it became clear that I did not feature in the plans. Then Vidi made an offer.

You know a bit of Hungary now with your father having been a professional footballer. There was a period in Spain and both you and Stefan ended up becoming footballers. Did you have a choice?
Of course! I did quite well in Spain in Judo and managed to win at local level. Football though was in my life everyday and I chose football also because of Stefan.

Was basketball ever an option? We understand that you love that sport.
This is true that I love basketball but I never played it at organised levels. I like Dallas Mavericks and Dirk Nowitzki, who are my favourites. He has just retired. I would gladly watch Nikola Jokics from the Denver Nuggets.

Getting back to the pitch: the two Scepovic boys ended up playing for the first team at Partizan and you became a captain at a very young age. There were league title wins and the national team.... How were you able to handle this?
Strange question, why would it be hard to handle?

There have been cases in Hungary with young players not being able to cope with success and that ended up halting their careers.
I do not think that these things would have taken me in the wrong direction. My father being close to me would surely have helped if I would have had any questions. It was an honour to wear the captains armband for the national team.

What are you most proud of when wearing a Vidi shirt?
Our performances in the season in Europe. The CL play off and the Europa League group stage. These are the biggest successes for me and the part that I enjoyed the most. I know that it is rare for clubs in Hungary to make it into the group stage so I am pleased that I could be part of it. I would not pick out any particular match in that series.

Do you think the club still has the chance to develop?
Certainly! It is enough just to look at the stadium and the infrastructure. I have been witnessing the building work during my time here that has gone on at this club. I could see day after day how the new arena was going up. You can also feel the way the club itself is developing. I am not talking only about Vidi but the whole of Hungarian football, which is improving. It is rare for this to happen within this region and the possibilities it offers within football. The facilities here in Fehervar are very good and the conditions back in Serbia are not similar.

Why do you think that there are more successful Serbian players than Hungarians at the international level?
I do not like to generalise but I can see that the pressure on youngsters back home is greater and they are put into teams faster. Teams play them at 19-20 years old, which means they already have a couple of years of experience at that level. Things here seem to be a little bit more comfortable when they are the gate of a big chance. Those who are talented and work hard will reach their rewards soon.

Talking about your brother who you ended up together celebrating the league title, he left the club during the winter. What did you go through in the dressing room?
One of the best things is when you play together with your brother and your both successful. We were champions at Partizan even if he was playing for a different club for the second half of that season. It felt great to celebrate together. I did not take his leaving personally as professional football is like this. I am clear that anything can happen. I understood the situation and it did not affect my relationship with the club.

What are your thoughts regarding recent games with Ferencvaros that have intensified? You ended up suffering an injury in the cup match with them.
It is an unfortunate aspect from the view of being in good form and having to miss out for a few weeks. Things could have been worse though. I had to miss out playing previously due to my knee. I do not read the news as to what is happening with the two clubs but my ears sometimes catch certain things. It is not for me to deal with and I just concentrate on performing on the pitch.

We needed your goal in the Hungarian Cup to end up winning the trophy.
It was a massive delight for me and I am pleased that I scored but it was the teams success. All of the players did well and we managed to close a successful season this way. We will need to work hard in the summer if we are to reach further good results. I will spend the break at a wedding of my best friend as I will be the witness. I will then holiday in Greece with my girlfriend. I hope that I can unwind and be ready for the start of pre-season.
