Armin Hodzic: I feel best out on the pitch

We spoke at length with recent summer signing Armin Hodzic as we got to know him a bit better.

- You were born in Sarajevo during the war in Bosnia. How was it growing up and did the war have any affect on your family?

My childhood was great and although I was born in a city that had serious battles, I only know about the things discussed and the history books. Sport was a much bigger influence on my life. Imagine that I grew up in surroundings where each direction in our housing estate led to the sports pitches. Basketball, concrete football pitches and a little further away were tennis courts next to each other. You could see the football pitch from our window. Then when I started to go to school, we would end up spending more time after school on the pitch. We would stay there until it was dark and would kick the ball around. It never bothered us that we could hardly see because of the dark. We only went back home in the end as we were hungry (laughter). I was around 6 or 7 when my father took me to the nearby Željezničar youth club. He was curious about their opinion of me. Fortunately the coaches there liked what they saw.

- Looking back after many years, what memories do you have of your time with Željezničar during your years as a youth player?

I spent so much time as a kid on buses than on football pitches (laughter). OK, it is not true, but it is a fact that I had to travel so much. This was not only in Bosnia, but in surrounding countries. We would always take part in youth football tournaments. I would often end up the best player in these tournaments or the top goalscorer. I collected a nice amount of trophy's at that time back home. Naturally there is still space in the cupboard!

- You moved to one of the most popular clubs in the World at the age of 16 when you joined Liverpool. You were 16 and linked up with their academy. How did this chance come about?

We took part in a Bosnian U17 international tournament and I played really well. I managed to score a goal in virtually every game. I was young enough to realise that there were many scouts watching. However, I would only find out later that a scout from Liverpool was present and I convinced him with my performance. Then the two clubs came to an agreement and suddenly I said to myself "Wow, I am here in Liverpool". I did my best to prove that I had a place in the Liverpool youth team, but I suffered an injury and then had problems securing a work permit. I tried to concentrate on playing football despite the problems and things were OK. I made my debut for the Liverpool reserve team in the summer of 2012 and we played a friendly game against the USA U20 side and I scored a goal.

It was a fantastic feeling playing for the Liverpool youth team and I became a better player as a result with each training session there. However, in the end fate had it that I would return home and continue with Željezničar. The first period was on loan as my career in senior football began. I had offers from Belgium and Holland but it was a good decision to go home to Bosnia. I enjoyed playing and scored many goals and I was satisfied with my situation.

- The next step in your career was in Croatia and one of the best clubs in Dinamo Zagreb,

That is correct and in 2014, Dinamo bought me from Liverpool and I spent 4 good years there. I was only 20 at that time, but I already had a Liverpool adventure behind me. I also played 2 seasons in the Bosnian first division and was second top goalscorer in season 2013/14. The years in Zagreb were also good and in 111 appearances, I scored 51 goals and won the league and cup. I also made my debut for my country at the age of 22. That remains one of the best feelings in my career so far. We played a friendly against Spain and lost 3-1 but I will never forget that match. I have so many good memories from my time in Dinamo Zagreb and this can be seen in my performance and the Croatian supporters relationship with me. They liked me and this honestly meant a lot to me.

- What plans did you arrive with during the summer at Vidi?

I have heard many good things about the club. Naturally when the chance came to sign for Vidi, I called my fellow nationals Anel Hadzic and Asmir Suljic and they only said good things about the club. I was also curious about finding out more about the club, and I started to dive into the internet to find out more about the history of Vidi. I realised then what a fantastic run they had in the UEFA cup in 1985 and they also knocked out the club where I started. I am proud to continue my career here and I would like to win the league title and also help the team as much as I can in the Europa League. I have had time in recent days to look around Szekesfehervar and it is a real small gem of a place and a lovely city. It really appeals to me just like Budapest does.

- What do you do in your free time and how do you spend the days when your not playing football?

I am very family orientated so I like to spend time with my family when I can. I have a sister who does not do sport, and is interested in totally different things, but our connection is very strong. I like to play tennis and hopefully there are one or two players at Vidi that I can play with. However, I feel best out on the pitch.
