Perhaps few know that it will be the fourth time that Vidi face Malmö FF in European competition on Tuesday. There have been 7 games between 1985 and 1993 with 2 games in the UEFA Cup, and a further 5 in the Intertoto cup. Vidi won all three home games without conceding a goal.

UEFA-Kupa 1985/1986 - For a place in the last 32

Just a few months after the name of Vidi had been flashed around the World following the UEFA Cup final matches with Real Madrid, the home supporters were hoping for a win in Szekesfehervar. Perhaps the miracle of a year before could be repeated. The visiting Swedish fans were curious to see how their side would do against a team that had beaten PSG and Manchester United a year earlier. 

Malmö were managed by Roy Hodgson, who would go on to manager the English national team as well as Fulham and Liverpool. The winning goal came in the 79th minute from Tibor Vegh.

Although Vidi scored an early goal in the return leg following an own goal from Moller. In the second half, the Swedes scored three goals in a fifteen minutes period. That saw them at that point going through with four minutes left of normal time. However, Vidi were awarded a penalty, which Szabo scored from to make the final score 3-2 on the night, but Vidi would go through on the away goal rule as the aggregate ended 3-3.

Intertotó Cup

The Intertoto cup was formed in 1961, which became UEFA Cup from 1995 and the Vidi and Malmö met several times. There were two games in the summer of 1986. You could see the difference between the UEFA Cup and the Intertoto Cup with 10000 present to watch the game in Szekesfehervar in 1985. However, only 800 had turned up in Malmö in 1986 and there were 1000 present in Szekesfehervar. Anders Palmer scored after a minute on the 14th June 1986, as he put the ball beyond keeper Koszta. Johansson scored a goal to make it 2-0 in the 47th minute and there were no further goals. The two met two weeks later in Szekesfehervar and goals from Simon and Kovacs made it a similar 2-0 scoreline. Gabor Horvath was sent off in the game in the final half hour. 

1987 saw another tie in the Intertoto Cup. The first match was in Hungary and ended in a 1-0 win thanks to Kanyok's goal. However, the Swedes comfortably won 4-0 in the return leg. 

The last game was in 1993 and ended in a 0-0 draw in the Intertoto Cup.
