Marko Nikolic: I know exactly what we need to do in the future

The Videoton manager reflected back on the first half of the season.

The fact is that we have improved compared to the last season. This is because we played in the Play-off phase of the Europe League and we collected four points more than the same time last year. But it is obviously not enough for me as a manager. We had some very good moments and very good matches. We were in the first position in the table until the last week. In that last week of the competition, we ran out of energy and out of some players from our squad. As everyone knows, we played some matches when we did this without five important players, and then we finished in the second place. That's a fact that we improved in terms of points than the same time last season. But, it's very clear, like I said earlier, it is not enough. After six months in Hungary, my staff and I had the time to get to know the club, the team and the league better. Now, at this moment, I know exactly what we need to do in the future to finish in the first position, which is the main target of the club for this season. I want to highlight one very important point. I did not come here just to work, just to get my salary. I came here to make some things here. I was not unemployed, I came from the club, who had just won the double and was getting ready for the Champion's League. After five minutes during my first talk with the owner, Mr. István Garancsi, I felt the importance to him, that this is his 10th anniversary being the owner of the club. I want to be the part of the project, be a champion and prepare a good team for European competitions. I felt big energy and ambitions for this from his side.  After six months, it's clear, that we have to make some changes. I have discussed this together with my coaching staff and the Director of Football, Zoltan Kovacs. We will have to let at least six players leave and plus, Maric Mirko and Adam Bódi who have already left, so that is eight in total. And we need to bring some fresh blood in, with quality and a good mentality. I want players who share the ambition of myself. In the second part of the season, I want to show an ambitious and battling team for the supporters. A team who will do everything on the pitch, without excuses. A side that would like to win each game. If they feel this, then they will be next to us in the second half of the season. I can promise to them, all the people from the club will fight for all common goals in the spring, which is the league title. I would now like to take the opportunity to wish all the players, employees, supporters and those Hungarian people that are reading this a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in advance. Hopefully everybody will have the opportunity to take a nice rest after a year of work. The team will work hard after the break as we go into pre-season and the spring season. We will be working hard each day as we fight to achieve our targets.”

The players will report back for the usual medical check-up on the 10th January. There will be four training sessions in Hungary, before they head off to the first training camp from 16th-30th January. There will be a second training camp in Spain from 3rd February – 13th February as they prepare for the spring. A total of 10 friendly games are planned during the pre-season and these will be notified to the supporters in time.
