Jozsef Varga: Second place is a very big disappointment

The midfielder shares his thoughts on the season just completed and also looks ahead.

There was an indifferent start to the league for the team and there were times when the team showed a different face in a game, which eventually cost us the title. How would you sum up the season?

The season did not start as we would have wanted it to. We dropped several points, which eventually ended up costing us. I was pleased that we then managed to get back up following that start. We started to play better and more confidently. The results came and we ended the autumn in first place. I feel that the winter pre-season went well and we made a good start to the spring. We picked up points and won matches. There was a break to the team's play following the point at Paks. We found it hard to recover for a while. We also dropped many points in games that we should have easily won. The second place was a big disappointment for me as I wanted to be a champion. However, it was down to us in the end. We ruined it and caused disappointment to our supporters. I would also like to add that Honved deserved the league title. They performed well throughout the spring.

The season also meant a big change for you personally as you left your home town to move to Szekesfehervar. Do you have any regrets?

I have no regrets about the decision. Despite arriving only towards the end of the transfer window, I managed to quickly blend in and my team mates and the club helped me, which I was pleased about. I feel that it was a good decision and I feel good here at Vidi.

What game would you pick out from the season that gave you positive memories?

Naturally it has to be the 4-1 win over Ferencvaros. I felt then on the team that we really wanted to win the league and that nothing would stop us. We went forward and although Fradi took the lead, we turned the game around and ended up comfortably winning. The last two weeks have seen such a transformation. There was the performance against Ferencvaros and the will to win, as well as the way we played against Honved a week later.

The team will have a short rest. How will you spend the roughly one week break?

I have gone back to my family in Debrecen. I plan to spend the few days relaxing with them and if we have time, I might go with my friends to Croatia for a few days.

The club will take part in European competition at the end of June. The new season will also start after that. What are you expecting from yourself and the others?

I still need to get over what has happened and have not managed to get over it yet. I think that is certain: When I return back to Fehervar, we will be full step ahead for the Europa League and also the start of the new league season. It is no secret that a good run in Europe will help us forget a little about the league season just ended. We need to prepare mentally and physically on both fronts fully. We cannot start another league season by dropping important points.
