Zoltan Kovacs: The most important thing is to be able to see the development

We sat down to talk about the autumn season and the future with the Director of Football.

Videoton ended the autumn season in first place. They also reached the third qualifying round of the Europa League. There was very little counting on the team making the play off's. There was also a massive shock with the Hungarian cup exit. Many new players arrived during the summer so it has been non stop. How would you sum up the half year?

The most important in the beginning of summer that the new coaching team arrived in Szekesfehervar. There was a new manager, coach, fitness coach and goalkeeping coach. This determined the work ahead and the fact that the majority of the coaching team are not Hungarian has resulted in more work for the members that were already here and all of the other club employees. We wanted to strengthen the team, which we finally managed to do. However, this did not happen in the period that we had planned. Although we planned ahead and had our targets, but one of the drawbacks with Hungarian football is that if we have a foreign player that we would like to bring in, he will wait until the final moment or will not come. It is also hard to bring in players from other Hungarian teams as they cost serious amounts as the rivals do not want them to leave. We started in the Europa League when our squad was far from complete. We negotiated the barriers well despite this and also played good football on the international stage. We had a difficult start to the new league season. We lost 8 points from our first 3 league matches. The squad was complete at the end of August and strengthened to the level that we can reach the targets set. The strength of the team is realistic to lead the league table. However, we did not always play at the level that was expected. The main thing is that we know the reasons for this and we know where we need to make changes. There are phases in football that simply cannot be rushed. Time to adjust and settle down is just one example. There were those that arrived in a suitable physical condition and performed really well. There are others that have not yet been able to play at the level of football that they are capable of.

What are you least satisfied about?

There were some unexpected defeats in the league that we were not calculating on. These are the types of games that the team will be able to comfortably win in the spring. The biggest pain of the autumn was our Hungarian cup exit. That spoiled a lot of the good overall picture, despite the fact that we are leading the league table. I do feel that the players picked up the appropriate conclusions from the Budafok defeat. Sometimes you do need the odd slap in order for the group to better bond and gel. This will help in the long term but naturally I do not want to give explanations for going out of the cup as I cannot. I would just try to pick out some positives that are possible.

What was the most memorable moment of autumn that you are most proud about?

Perhaps I would pick out the two legs against Midtjylland. In those games, especially the second leg, we played really well. We deserved to go through. I am most proud that we have been continuously developing since the summer. The results of this is that we are now leading the league table. This gives us a good feedback, but I do not want to overestimate things. Everyone has to continue to concentrate on reaching the final target, which is to win the league. I would also mention the positive atmosphere that has been experienced in home games, and that even more are travelling to the away games.

There are currently 4 players leading the goalscoring chart, which is a very rare thing. You could say that the team really has been very attacking.

We spoke a lot in the spring that are attacking play was not the real thing and that it needed to be strengthened. The club received plenty of criticism that we were not able to replace Nemanja Nikolics. I think that this has now been consigned to the past. It is a real step forward that the team is not relying on just one players performance for results. We have several players that are able to decide a game and there are plenty of variations within the squad. This makes it that much harder for our opponents to prepare against us. We have also not even spoken about those players that joined us later and have not yet broken into the side, but with time will make the team stronger.

Will there be player movement during the winter?

Yes, there will be movement in the dressing room. When we put together this year the larger than normal squad, the aim was to provide the coaching staff with the necessary opportunities, which include the chance to make choices and then decisions. To be able to know who they can count on. The pressure on the club is great and the media spend a lot of time about the fact that some of the international players at the club cannot get into the team. I can only say that I cannot remember that anyone was promised a ticket to the starting eleven when they came to us. Competition is great but the club can only benefit from this. The players have to continuously perform and show that they can be counted on. The manager will base his decisions on the everyday work of the players and who he can place his trust in, and for this he takes the responsibility naturally. We will not really be making any signings, except in very justifiable cases. The squad is strong and able to achieve the set targets. There will be movement in the other direction. Those players that have had limited playing time will be the ones mainly leaving the team.

There will be two training camps during the winter pre-season. The first will be to the Emirates and the second to Spain. The latter has been a regular choice for the team to prepare. However, the squad have yet to train in the Emirates. What was the decision behind going to the Middle East?

It is true that Hungarian clubs do not really travel to these places for their training camp. However, those clubs in the north of Europe tend to travel more to the Emirates. It is not by accident as the weather out there is the most stable during this period of the year. They also have wonderful infrastructure in place and there is also the chance to play against good teams. However much it might be interesting, the name of Videoton does already mean that this training camp does not place extra financial burden on the club. The costs will not exceed those of the Spanish trip. There will be more training sessions per day in the first training camp, and it is important for the players to be able to prepare in a stable environment.

Your currently on a professional trip. When will the winter start for you and how will you celebrate the festive period?

Yes, I will get back during the second half of the week and I will have another meeting with the owner and the manager. Then I will have some time to rest a little. I was not able to go on holiday in the summer and I would like to do this now and spend some time with my family. I would also like to take the chance to wish all the Videoton supporters a very happy Christmas and new year. I would like them to give us the same backing over the spring as we have received so far. Let's hope that we can celebrate together in May.
