Zoltan Kovacs: We had to start from a very low position but we managed to get back

The Videoton director of sport spoke about the last four months, the plans for the transfer window, youth system and the pre-season that will start in January.

You arrived at Videoton on the 18th August. I do not think that you have had too much time to be bored over that period. How do you remember back to these four months?

I can honestly say that when they named me as the director of sport for Videoton, I did not know what to grab hold of as there was so much to do. The team started the season very badly. We then had a very important match in the Europa League play off in Poznan a couple of days later. We really had to come back from a very low position, both mentally and physically. We had to pay special attention to this during training and in competitive games. We needed to pull them out and they had to pull themselves out from the hole that they were in. I feel that looking at the results since, we managed to do that.

That European League match and the seven matches that followed saw Tamas Peto sit on the manager's bench.

Yes, I would once again like to thank Tamas Peto for the work he did in those 60 days. He did really good work and played a big role in the new manager taking over a better side in October. I would also like to say that the people in the background and the club employees also helped a lot with the work, which resulted in the team moving upwards. This shows the strength of the team that during those difficult days, the secure background was ever present. A weaker club or less well organized outfit would not have been able to climb out of that situation.

Ferenc Horvath took over the team at the start of October. Results since have must have pleased you.

I am not a person who deals with statistics. However, all the numbers show that the team are in form over the last month and a half. The target set was a place in the top three and progressing in the Hungarian cup, which has been completely achieved by Ferenc Horvath and his staff. The team have adapted well to the style of the new manager. The players are more balanced and the results show this.

Ferenc Horvath said in his end of year interview that the defeat against Ferencvaros, was the match that he was most satisfied with his side. Do you agree with his surprising answer?

I am pleased the most that we won all of the big matches, with the exception of the game with Ferencvaros. That shows the strength of the team. I agree with Ferenc when he says that one of our best games was a match we lost at the Groupama Arena. It was played with real tempo and was a very enjoyable game. We deserved a point at least in that match. I am sure that fate will give us back those lost points during the course of spring.

The supporters will be most interested to know about the possible changes to the squad during the winter break. Will there be arrivals?

The players and coaching staff are now resting, but we are working flat out to strengthen the side. I am working hard on naming arrivals in the near future. There are those where negotiations are at an advanced stage, but I do not want to rush anything, so I will not say anymore.

Hungary qualified for the European Championships on the 28th November. What can that mean for Vidi and the attention that the Hungarian players will receive?

With player sales, or even in transfers coming in could be advantageous that Hungary have qualified for the championships in France. The club is strong but we are in a league that is not the most attractive. The national team success is not only one for the players, but for Hungarian football overall. It will help push us more in to the focus in the future and give extra attention to Hungarian football. All of the domestic sides can profit from this.

There were not only changes to the senior team during the summer, but also to the youth system. How are things progressing within the club in this area?

There is lots of hard work ahead for us in this area. Imre Kenyeres is an experienced person who has a serious past within the game. We succeeded in finding such a coach to head our youth system. The target is to strengthen Vidi's own youth system. To be able to keep the talented youngsters and try to make sure that they do not want to leave for elsewhere. There has been due diligence carried out in this section. We tried to measure up what our strengths are and also our weaknesses. We also need to look at the possibilities. I am sure that the club is strong, and the youth system is very important to the city. I am sure that things will work well in the long run.

The middle of the autumn saw a mentor program begin at the club, which was the first of its type in the country. What has the response been?

We are proud of this and the fact that we have put together such a program. It is pleasing to see the serious players and the way they are enthusiastic and have taken their roles seriously. The same applies to the youngsters who are the most important in this. The respect and friendship that they have shown each other is really good to see. This program will help the kids to choose football and Vidi.

Ferenc Horvath would like a more aggressive side over the spring. Do you share that view?

I also agree with the head coach with this. We need to be more dominating, braver and a more aggressive side that will run out on to the pitch. We need to have great stamina, which is what I am really looking forward to the most over the winter pre-season. Even more important is that there are enough good characters within the squad, but I hope that similar types will also join.

You mentioned that the end of the year will not be about resting. In the little time when you will not be working, what will you be doing?

I will spend it with my wife and kids, and spend the festive period with my family. We are not planning to travel, as the squad will return back on the 4th January. I like to unwind in times like this and enjoy the rest and each other's company. I need to gain strength as a tough spring lies ahead.
