The 12th November 2015 was a black day for Hungarian football. The loss of two bright stars in the form of Marton Fulop 32, and Pal Varhidi 84 made it a very sad day.
The Hungarian national side naturally paid their own respects to the duo before the important play off match with Norway in Oslo. Keeper Gabor Kiraly pulled off a stunning save after 3 minutes with a point blank save. The game balanced out in the minutes that followed. Hungary then took the lead on 26 minutes with a goal from Laszlo Kleinheisler. Akos Elek could have extended that lead on half time but his header went over the bar.
The home side piled on the pressure in the second half, while Hungary produced a very tactical defensive display. Norway came close to levelling after 71 minutes, but Kiraly was on hand again to deny the home side. The Norwegians had another dangerous effort on the visiting goal in the final minutes. A shot from Johansen was again saved by Kiraly, but the rebound fell to Helland, whose effort came back off the bar from 7 meters.
The 4 minutes of injury time did not see any further change to the scoreline. Hungary will take a 1-0 first leg lead in Oslo to the second leg match in Budapest on Sunday. Hungary could qualify for the European Championships for the first time since 1972.
