Győző Burcsa: It will be a serious but positive transformation

Vidi.hu have prepared a lengthy interview with the new director of the football club.

How did the discussions begin between you and the club, and why are you ready to come back in to football after a period of 20 years?

Ferenc Kovacs (the Honorary President of Videoton FC), has been very ambitious for many years now, and he wanted to me to step back in to football, as there is a need for me. I had always said no until now, but in the most recent request, he painted a picture that forced me to think. Ferenc Kovacs also added that the owner would like me to return, as a former player, who managed to achieve success in the civil world. We then met again for another chat and we finally agreed. My overall opinion on the game has remained unchanged, and I feel that in this position I can do more to change our football in a good direction.

What will your exact role at the club be?

The professional work and to be responsible for transfers at the club. The creation of the playing squad, to choose the coaches and players, and to organise the first team and oversee the coaching staff. I will be in charge of this assignment. I would like to emphasize that the coaching staff that we eventually choose will receive full confidence. I will not be interfering in their work, while I can see that things are going according to how we had earlier spoken.

How long are you planning to be with Videoton?

We agreed a long term contract with the owner, but naturally it will results that determine the quality of a person's work, so good cooperation is essential to get results.

How do you imagine the team and the coaching staff?

The head coach will be foreign, but there will be a Hungarian coach amongst his staff, who I do not yet want to name. He will be there to pay attention to the Hungarian players and explain the tactical requests to them and keep their spirits up. It is important for the football club that these youngsters become a role model to those players coming through the youth development scheme. These kids should feel that it is worth working. This is one kind of frame of mind; career, where they are desperate to fight and always remain mentally strong.

How much will the squad be changing?

I am currently going through matches. There are players who have been highlighted, who we would like to sign, but I cannot talk about any concrete issues. There are then some players who will not be continuing their playing careers at Videoton FC. The ratio between foreign and Hungarian players will be changing within the dressing room.

What targets do you have for the future?

The first main task is to have more disciplined and devoted team play, and players playing with much more heart, which the supporters can see. We need normal European style coaches and players within the dressing room. We will need to work a lot on this, so that not only the style but our appearance and attitude should be European, as well as the behaviour out there on the pitch and the reaction. I would like to create a basis, which can be built upon. The basis of each results will come from discipline and order, but naturally we also need the technical side of things in football, and to keep to the tactical demands. That will be the responsibility of the head coach, for which I will give all my help.

What feelings do you have inside with you coming back to Fehervar?

I am returning back with great feelings. I have built a home in Szekesfehervar in recent years, after I sold my flat in Sopron. This all happened before I sat down to even discuss anything with Videoton. My aim was to settle down in this city, as my family live in Szekesfehervar and Budapest, so I would have liked to remain close to them.

What reception are you expecting from the supporters?

The supporters liked me from what I could feel over recent decades. Many of them like the members of the 1984-85 side and do not think that I have done anything since then, for them not to like me.

You have been paying attention to Hungarian football from the outside for a long time. What opinions do you have in this area?

I can see that the infrastructure is developing better than the players. I would like to come back so that these advantages can be better used by the players, so that they enjoy the situation and be more successful as a result. I can talk about the days when we trained in socks that had holes in them, or that there were boots without any studs on them, or the times when we trained on gravel pitches, but no one is really interested in the past. We have to move with the times and the young players need to understand that a good system is in place, and that with these facilities, they really need to deliver all that we ask of them. I do not want to live in the past, and we need to build a good team besides the good conditions here.

What targets have been set results wise?

To qualify for European competition. There will be some big changes ahead, but the direction is a positive one. I would like that those that come out to watch our games, should not see players slowly walking around or even arrogant players. It is possible to play badly, but for a player not to play his part for the rest of the team is unthinkable.
